We are really struggling to find names we both love, we have a rather large list of names we like but don't love so looking for opinions and maybe suggestions of names we might like.

Girls middle names we are considering are Emma, Laura & Margaret after family but these are quite hard to work with.

Girls names

Amelia
Emily
Ella
Eva
Emma
Eliza
Zara
Pippa
Amber
Matilda
Sophia

Boys middle names will either be William or George (DH prefers William as its a stronger family connection)

Boys names

Jack
Alfie
Oscar
Lucas
Daniel
Theo (DH not keen)
Hugo (we both like but DH worries it's too posh)
Elliot
Flynn

Thanks

I like Emma or Zara for a girl, or Lucas for a boy, but they are all very 'top 20' names at the moment (enough to put me off using any of them), so expect them to be at school with some kids with the same name.

Eliza - LOVE Eliza. Eliza Margaret is lovely, that would be my pick of your names
Emma - I like this a lot, and you don't hear it much now!
Matilda - I like it, and like nn Tilly

Lucas - like this a lot, Lucas William would be my pick!
Elliot - Also like Elliot. Elliot George is great!
Daniel - I like Daniel but not so keen on inevitable Dan/Danny. This may be because I have taught a lot of naughty Dans/Dannys!

Zara, Amber, Theo, Hugo, Flynn - not so keen, I can see the appeal of them, they just don't do anything for me. I like Pippa but see it as a nickname and don't really like Philippa.
Amelia, Emily, Ella, Eva, Sophia, Jack, Alfie, Oscar - all nice enough, I find them a little bland as hear them a lot.

I prefer Sophie to Sophia, Emmeline to Amelia/Emily, Eve or Evangeline to Eva?

How about Clara, Cora, Alice, Elise, Eloise, Louisa, Ada, Iris, Imogen, Eleanor?

Alexander, Dominic, Henry, Edward, Kit, Oliver, Gabriel, Samuel?

I don't particularly want a popular name, I was one of 4 in my class and I hated it. On my list Jack, Alfie, Emily & Ella are quite popular here but don't know any of the other ones. Might try and find some less popular, it's so hard!

I like all the girl names except Matilda, and all the boy names except Lucas and Hugo.

I particularly like Flynn!

Nomorefilm · 07/04/2015 14:21

Thanks ashes, I have a cousin called Sophie and we don't get on so puts me off, I agree as a name it's nicer than than Sophia. I like Eve, Imogen & Alice also like Edward. Love Alexander but my DS has it as a middle name.

Got to give Hugo some love. Not posh at all (probably used to be) and not overly popular. Very popular in Europe though I believe. It's a lovely name for a little boy and will carry well into adulthood.

MaudGonneAway · 07/04/2015 14:28

I would say that Jack, Alfie, Oscar, Lucas, Flynn, Amelia/Emilia, Sophia, Eva, Ella, Emily are all very popular, if that's a concern.

Out of the others, I'd probably go with Eliza and Theo.

Nomorefilm · 07/04/2015 14:37

I do really like Hugo, we have done for a couple of years now. I don't think I can convince DH on Theo I love it but he doesn't seem at all keen. Gutted Lucas is popular as we both really like it. Eliza is possibly my favourite girls name and DH is probably Emma and Zara.

Our DS is called Ben so can't really get away with anything too out there!

Amelia - not keen. Don't like the 'mealy' sound. Very popular
Emily - quite like it. Very popular.
Ella - like it.
Eva - love it.
Emma - it's ok
Eliza - it's ok
Zara - love it
Pippa - like it but would probably use Philippa for full, even though less nice
Amber - love it - maybe just because I teach a gorgeous 12 year old one
Matilda - love it
Sophia - really like it

Jack - love it though very popular
Alfie - quite like it. Very popular
Oscar - love it
Lucas - quite like it
Daniel - quite like it
Theo (DH not keen) - love it but no good if you DH not keen
Hugo (we both like but DH worries it's too posh) - not keen
Elliot - love it
Flynn - love it

From your lists I think I would go for one of:
Zara Emma
Amber Laura
Matilda Margaret
Elliot George (unless worried about George Elliot)
Jack William
Oscar William

Other suggestions -
Alice, Alexa, Cassandra, Callie, Emmeline, Erin, Freya, Georgia, Hannah, Isla, India, Jessica, Julia, Katie, Lara, Layla, Lydia, Luna, Martha, Maisie, Mia, Madeleine, Miranda, Naomi, Olivia, Phoebe, Rosie, Ruby, Sara, Sadie, Saskia, Thea, Verity

Archie, Aidan, Caleb, Dominic, Ethan, Felix, Fergus, Finley, Harry, Isaac, Jamie, Jared, Luca, Logan, Micah, Noah, Nicholas, Owen, Patrick, Reuben, Samuel, Thomas, Zachary

Nomorefilm · 07/04/2015 14:48

Thanks for those other suggestions manic, some of them are already in our family so can't use but I'm going to steal Isla, Martha, Ruby, Thea, Luca, Reuben & Logan. Will see what DH thinks.

They're all pretty popular. I quite like Eliza, Matilda and Emma. Dislike Zara, Pippa and Amber, and the others are fine but a bit insipid imo. From your boys' list my picks would be Daniel, Elliot or Flynn. Not a fan of Alfie, Jack or Lucas.

sweetpeame · 07/04/2015 21:30

Like all your boys names with the exception of Flynn. It's a pretty common Irish surname and IMO not a good first name. It's not exactly like calling your son Smith but it's not too far off (although you might not mind that, Smith Jared in Sex and the City was pretty cool Wink)

Guin1 · 08/04/2015 16:04

As PPs have said, a lot of your names are very popular.
My favourites from your original list are:
Eliza, Zara and Pippa (as nn for Philippa)
Daniel, Theo and Elliot

Of the others that you've mentioned, I like Martha and Edward.
How about Luke instead of Lucas? Far less popular at the moment.

Jackieharris · 08/04/2015 16:07

Your lists look very similar to the top 10 lists!

Gingerandcocoa · 08/04/2015 16:15

How about Cecilia for a girl?
