There must be a name I'm not thinking of...

I've started previous threads about this but arghhh!

I'm due with a boy in May/June. Other children are Samuel (Sam) and Margaret (Maggie). Last name starts with Br and rhymes with stick.

For this little boy I like William, but I really want to use the family name Dawson in the middle. I just don't think they flow well.

DH wants Oliver Dawson Br_. I like the way it sounds but I don't love Oliver. I could see myself warming to it though.

We both think Henry is "okay". We like Ben and Jack as names but I don't think they go with our surname. I like Max but I don't want to repeat initials. James is one I thought of briefly (is FIL's name too) but I had a weird ex called that.

There must be one I'm not thinking of! Something classic, preferably with a shorter nickname, flows well with Dawson Surname. I love Charles/Charlie but a close friend has just used Charlie. She says she doesn't mind if I do too, but I think it would be strange.

I'd like to go with two middle names, like William Oliver Dawson Surname, but DH is totally anti and as the other DC only have one it does seem strange.

It'd be easy to abandon Dawson and just go with William and a new middle, but I like to use family or meaningful names in the middle, so for now, I'll hunt for another first name. Help?!

William flows fine.

Thomas/Tom

JimbosJetSet · 22/03/2015 06:27

Robert
Peter

CheerfulYank · 22/03/2015 06:32

Robert is DS's middle so that's out. (My dad's name.) And Peter in our part of the US is akin to calling a child Willy in the UK Wink Which is a shame as I actually really like it.

I like Benjamin a lot but Ben Surname isn't good.

Do you really think William Dawson flows well? I can't decide. I think the endings are too similar or something. But thatay just be hormones...

We have similar tastes I think. I like both Oliver and William but both are really overdone where we live.

We also had:

Louis
Aidan
Joseph

And I loved but DH didn't:
Elliot
Alexander

LionWings · 22/03/2015 06:41

I would really worry about the endings if you like William. They aren't that similar and full names aren't used often anyway. I would be more worried about first / last names. Go for it Smile

Alexander sounds pretty good

Leeds2 · 22/03/2015 12:04

I like Alexander/Alex/Xander too.

Or George/Georgie?

AuntieStella · 22/03/2015 12:07

Alexander has so many short forms, it might be the 'safe' bet.

I don't see William as problematic.

How about Timothy?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/03/2015 12:21

What about just Dawson? I think it sounds great with your surname and the other kids' names.

Otherwise how about:

Leo
Morgan
David/Davy
Jonathan
Jamie
Matthew

Blondie87 · 22/03/2015 13:29

I think William Dawson works just fine!
I also think Alexander and Matthew work well too.

CheerfulYank · 22/03/2015 15:10

I do like Alexander a lot but like Alec as a shortening rather than Alex. Does Alec work with our surname or does it have the same issue as Jack?

OP posts:
CheerfulYank · 22/03/2015 15:12

We actually had Alexander-called-Alec on the list if DD had been a boy. My mother insisted it wasn't a shortening for Alexander. I said "yes it it, Alec Baldwin is actually an Alexander."

Her response? "Well, I hate him so he doesn't count."

Confused It's still his name, mom...

Elephants I do actually like just Dawson, but surnames are huge around here: Carter, Hudson, Grady, etc and I don't want it lumped in with that whole trend.

The issue I can see with William with your surname is its kind of 'willy dick' nickname territory. Sorry

Alexander Dawson
Quentin Dawson
Dawson William
Dawson Alexander
Dawson Henry
Dawson James

Dawson works well as first name imo

Rivercam · 22/03/2015 15:26

Daniel Dawson
Christopher Dawson
Nicholas Dawson
Frederick Dawson
Patrick Dawson
Martin Dawson
Michael Dawson
Stephen Dawson
Thomas Dawson
Richard Dawson
Alistair Dawson
Tristan Dawson

CheerfulYank · 22/03/2015 15:26

That's true Art but Willy does not mean penis here. :) Here it's just a name.

DramaAlpaca · 22/03/2015 15:31

I think William Dawson flows perfectly well, as does Oliver Dawson. Both go very well with your other DC's names too.

roastpots · 23/03/2015 09:49

OhMjh · 23/03/2015 10:13
