What do we think of August for a boy?

Maybe a bit premature to discuss, at only 11 weeks, but we are expecting baby #7, and as I already have 5 boys and one girl, I am going to go ahead and assume this one will be another boy. I have used pretty much every boy name that I love, and am having a hard time getting fired up about any others.

I like Reuben, Felix and Gideon, and just recently thought of August as well. DH and I got married in August, but baby would be born in September. I like Gus as a nn too. I don't know. Most month names are for girls, so I wonder if people will feel it is feminine at all? I need inspiration, reassurance, something! I would like probable boy #6 to not have a meaningless, we had to call you something, name. Thanks all in advance.

I prefer Augustus especially if he isn't born in August. If it is Gus you are particularly after what about Gustav, Fergus or Angus?

petitdonkey · 09/03/2015 15:28

Not sure, I also thought about the book 'Wonder'.

What about Gilbert? Otherwise, if you are set on Gus I would go for Augustine.

lovelychops · 09/03/2015 15:30

Going against the grain - I like it.
Wouldn't assume it was a girls name at all. Know it to be a Scandi name and the main character in the book Wonder (which may or may not have negative connotations).
I think months can be used as names. I know an adult with an unusual month name and it totally suits her.

I think it sounds like a boys' name, too. It's a strong sound and also it would be Augusta for a girl.

Love the nn Gus.

However, I do think it's a bit odd if he's not born in August, even though it's a proper name, not just a 'month' name...

Rhubarbgarden · 09/03/2015 16:51

I like it. It's definitely a boys name. I like Augustus even better, and Gustav. I have a little Gus though so I'm a bit biased towards these names.

Allalonenow · 09/03/2015 17:09

I'm not keen on August, but I do like Augustus.
I also like Reuben and Felix but not keen on Gideon.
How about Horatio?

Gugglebum · 09/03/2015 20:49

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is where I kept getting stuck with Augustus too, especially since our surname shares a couple of letters with Gloop. Grin I like some of the other suggestions too, and while I am not into matching my kids' names per se, I wouldn't want one that stuck out like a sore thumb, either. Never in a million years did I dream I might be naming 6 boys in my lifetime. Much harder than I thought it could be. You've all given me a lot to think about, thank-you.

Love it.
One of the sons from the family in 'Alaska the last frontier' has that name, and its really grown on me.

shipsinthenight · 09/03/2015 20:55

Reminds me of August Rush, the orphaned musician in the self- titled movie.

AlpacaMyBag · 09/03/2015 20:58

FYI there's a female August in The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood.

crje · 09/03/2015 20:59

No to August

Leon
Angus( Aonghus)

gaahhnonicknamesleft · 09/03/2015 21:01

Magnus?

I do like Gideon actually

girliefriend · 09/03/2015 21:05

I think August for a boy would be terrible - sorry!

Like most of the other suggestions on here though, Magnus is cool!!

matchingmoll · 10/03/2015 13:40

It's an obvious boys' name to me. I like it, think of Strindberg. Don't think it matters if the baby is born in August. Like Augie or Gus as a shortening. August Felix, lovely.

flowerygirl · 10/03/2015 14:24

It's a girl's name. Terrible name for a boy, sorry. Augustus is cool if you have to go there.

HazelShade · 10/03/2015 14:29

It's most definitely a boys name! I've never heard of it for a girl? But I have to say I think it would be odd if he was born in September...

duckbilled · 10/03/2015 14:35

It is a boys name but it reminds of August Marks one of the gangsters on sons of anarchy

peutetre · 11/03/2015 10:11

Seems a bit odd if he's born in September tbh.

RL20 · 11/03/2015 10:18

Love it. It sounds like a strong name! Or 'Augustus'.
It's no different to a girl called April, May, June, or Summer. I also know of a girl called Tuesday.

MaraThonbar · 11/03/2015 11:00

What about Septimus? Not many people get to use it legitimately!
