Anyone know? I've never heard this name before.

I imagine it's a derivation of Hippolytus. Hippolytus was the son of Theseus.

Yes, to the Theseus origin. The meaning has something to do with horses; have come across the French version Hippolyte, and I remember a Cornish village of St Ippolit, so there must be several derivations.

Hippolyta was the Amazonian queen who married Theseus.

In the myth, Hippolytus was the SON of Hippolyta and Thesus. The story did not end happily...

There was also - later, in the Christian Era - a St Hippolytus of Rome (lived around 300 AD). Churches and villages are named after him

i know someone who called their baby Hippolyte. I mean, I know the french have weird names, but that is probably the worst one so far.

Oh, sorry - didn't read carefully! Blush

Thanks everyone.
