Have seen a similar thread for girls names - we are last name S mith but like fairly classic boys names - any suggestions? We like William and Samuel but can we really do Will Smith or Sam Smith? Help! Any ideas?

Smith goes with everything

Err, no.

OP is right. Will, Sam, John, Cyril, George, Ian , Warren, Winston etc etc etc all need to be avoided.

I think Smith goes with everything.

It's got to be worth googling anything you like to make sure not a criminal/ White African leader/ unfortunate fictional character, though.

Three or four syllable first names go well with single syllable surnames, especially where first or second syllable is stressed. Try: Sebastian, Jonathan, Giddeon, Horatio, William, Indigo etc.

If you love Sam Smith then go for it, let's face it, he probably won't be the next Michael Jackson who everyone will know of in 20 years time.

Will Smith seems here to stay though, you might want to avoid that! We had a boy who looked vaguely like Will Smith at my school, he was treated to choruses of the Fresh Prince theme every time he walked into a room! Though he would be known for something new by your son's peers of course.

Emu - you want her to call the child Will i am?

I feel your pain, op, as our surname is Brown (well, not mine but my dcs')

I did go for quite unusual names for my dcs as a result. My poor PIL has a name that had been quite inoffensive all his life and now is associated with a "celebrity" you would not want to be confused for.

Morelikeguidelines · 18/02/2015 19:08

Oh yes - google everything - I agree.

turdfairynomore · 18/02/2015 19:14

"Common" names can be quite tricky I think? My friend was "Brown" & it ruled out lots of names, for a range of reasons. Couldn't be Charlie Brown or James Brown. Couldn't be Scarlett or ruby Brown-because they're red, not Brown! Couldn't be India or Mark as she's a teacher so in the roll book they'd be a Brown Indian or a Brown Mark!! It took a while!!

Hugo Smith
Connor Smith
Jacob Smith

I would avoid famous Smiths e.g. Sam Smith, Will Smith, Paul Smith etc.

I would also avoid popular first names as Smith is already so popular.

How about
Quentin Smith
Dominic Smith
Reuben Smith
Christopher Smith
