Elizabeth Margaret or Elizabeth Vera?

My daughter is 10 days old and the day she was born we were deciding between Elizabeth Margaret and Elizabeth Vera. My partner told his mum that we were deciding between the two. Unfortunately, she got the wrong end of the stick and announced to everyone her name was Elizabeth Vera! So a kindly avalanche of cards congratulating us on the birth of Elizabeth Vera ensued. Which was nice. But a bit previous.

We decided the day after she was born to call her Elizabeth Margaret and announced it to the rest of our family and friends.

But now, looking at some of the early cards from elderly relatives with Elizabeth Vera on them, I am not sure! Elizabeth Vera looks great in old lady hand writing! We haven't registered her birth yet so we can change our minds.

Elizabeth is definite as her first name.

I like Margaret because it sounds like a strong, no nonsense name to me. It's not just Thatcher and the Queen's sister, there are a lot of other Margarets. Atwood, Mead, Hodge. My mum's middle name is Margaret too.

My granny was Vera and I think it's a cool name.

Which do you prefer?

Elizabeth Margaret or Elizabeth Vera?

Why not all three, Elizabeth Margaret Vera is a great name.
Congratulations, she's gorgeous!!

Thank you very much! And good idea. The only thing is that we are double barrelling our two names for her surname so it would make it rather long.

Good suggestion by Frisky.

Congratulations, she's very cute.

Maybe just Vera then as Elizabeth Margaret Double-Barrelled is a lot of syllables?

I love Elizabeth Vera, really cute. Congratulations! xx

Ahhh, yes, that's a good point.

Elizabeth Vera is lovely and very strong. Vera Brittain was a very interesting and inspiring woman - as was your granny I'm sure Smile

Vera's beautiful (It makes me think of Vera Brittain too) and slightly more uncommon than Margaret (which is also lovely, so I see your dilemma!)
I'd go for Vera though, definitely!

I prefer Elizabeth Vera. Love the name!

CharlotteMelrose · 13/02/2015 17:47

Thanks everyone. Vera is the clear winner. I like it too. If we do decide on Vera I need to find a way to tell relatives and friends that doesn't make them recoil in horror at the indecisiveness.
