Eleanor - pronunciation and mean nickname potential

Also - how about mean nicknames? Only one I can think of is "smelly Ellie" but I'm sure there are more.

It's a lovely, time honoured name. Classy at any age.

How it is pronounced will vary but I don't think any of the variations are unpleasant.

EL-e-nor I love the name. All names have potential mean nick names -and of thru don't kids will many sone up based on something else.... Go for it :)

Ellen-ur here. Though all the Eleanor's I know are always called Ellie.

My parents avoided calling me Eleanor as I was, errr, on the larger side when born and they were concerned id grow up to be a large child and be called names at school

Eleanor is lovely, my sister has used it for her daughter. She doesn't get called anything other than Eleanor and she's in her 20s now.

We call her Ellie day to day, some times smellie/ smelly Ellie but she knows it's affectionately so I can't see in becoming a mean nickname when she's older

El-eh-nor or El-eh-nah. I've known people with both pronunciations, but neither were shortened. If you went with the 'nor' pronunciation, Nora could be a NN. Or Lennie maybe?

I would shorten it to Nell. Nell Gwynne was Charles II's mistress, she was very beautiful but died very young of a stroke.

Thanks for opinions. I do like the historical associations with the name. Was thinking mainly Eleanor of the famous crosses. DS is Thomas so if we go for it, both DCs will have "old" names. Good point to consider queenbean.

So I guess people just learn your preferred pronunciation and then use that. My friend's mum had a boss who mispronounced her name for 20 years .

I pronounce it ELL-un-uh. I think that's the usual way, though some people pronounce it ELL-i-nore. Never heard it pronounced any other way.

I pronounce it just like Ellen with an a on the end (so ELL-in-a) unless someone specifically tells me they want it pronounced a different way. Never heard anyone make "smelly" jokes about any of the Eleanors I've known, but one couple I know with a daughter of that name used to call her Nelligan sometimes when she was very little. I think I like Nell better than Ellie as a short form but there's no reason why you have to shorten it at all.

Our Ellie/Eleanor (El-an-or) gets called a wide variety of nicknames but none really derivative of her actual name other than Ellie. It's a beautiful name.

I know an Eleanor (El-en-or) known mainly as Lennie.

Why would you not pronounce the -or at the end? I don't understand.
