Any Oscar Wild fans?

I'm struggling with boys names. Have always thought that Earnest was a good one though, then thought about the importance of being Earnest and decided that both Jack and Algernon were quite nice too.

Just wondering if anyone was familiar with any more of Wild's work and the names of his characters. Dorian is unlikely to make my list!

Fingal was one of Wilde's middle names.

Basil is the name of the artist who paints Dorian. The characters in Lady Windermere's fan and An Ideal Husband are all along the lines of Lord Windermere and Sir Robert Chiltern.

Maybe Bracknell or Cardew, but they're both female characters.

Our DD is an Oscar Wilde heroine and if this bump is a girl she will be too. Not so good at the boys names, although I love Ernest (the name is spelt like this usually, rather than being earnest).

But the 'character' was spelt Ernest.

I just wonder if I could persuade DH about Ernest it sounds a little old at the moment and is Earnie a good baby nick name?

I'm also a huge Jane Austen fan but DH will not be convinced about Fitzwilliam! Maybe Frederick will make the short list though.

Thinking about it I quite like Oscar too.

I used Wilde's name for my ds - he was born 150 years after Oscar Wilde was born and I love the name.

Rhubarbgarden · 20/01/2015 13:43

I love Ernest.

wigglesrock · 20/01/2015 14:08

I never thought I liked the name Ernest and Ernie just no, but I've just finished reading a book about Ernest Hemmingway and his wives called him Nesto - that I like Smile.

Isolde85 · 28/01/2015 21:05

What about Wilde's sons' names?
Cyril
Vyvyan

If you end up choosing Ernest, don't spell it Earnest, or Earnie.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/01/2015 17:46

I like Ernest, but hate Ernie.

Lots of nice Austen names -

Edmund
Edward
William
Frederick
for example.

GobblersKnob · 31/01/2015 17:48

I just went with his forename......

How about Bunbury?
