Hi All,

Would love to hear your thoughts on the name Meadow for a girl? My hubby loves it and it's growing on me. Would like something unusual and slightly unique and would love your opinions please.

Other names we have considered are:
Pheobie
Amber
Fearne
Evie

Many thanks. Xx

Meadow sounds like a euphemism for someone who doesn't want to say labia or pubic hair.

A neighbour's child is called Meadow and when I first heard it I thought it was so lovely. I do prefer more unusual names though. I think it's very pretty and it doesn't seem that rare according to this thread!

beatricequimby · 29/12/2014 22:27

It's fine for a cute baby but potentially embarrassing if she is a self conscious teenager.

curiousgeorgie · 29/12/2014 22:32

I love Meadow. I think it works for all ages...

Here are some more pretty but unusual names for you:
Hebe
Juno
Seren
Ishbel
Liyana
Matilde

Meadow is associated strongly with cows in my mind, I think due to all the nursery rhymes... Ring o' Roses (Cows in the meadow, eating buttercups), Skip to My Lou ("Cows in the meadow, moo, moo, moo) etc which would put me off.

There are other names which have the meaning meadow - Lea/Leah etc.

grumpyoldgitagain · 29/12/2014 22:40

Meadow is nice, first association was with the Sopranos when I read it but it is still a nice name and I would have been tempted to use it if it went with my surname

BackforGood · 29/12/2014 22:41

No. Please use a person's name rather than the name of a field.

Deerhound · 29/12/2014 23:19

Ooh, Leah is good, might steal that!

ArabellaStrange · 29/12/2014 23:45

Ellie, is that you?

Love love love Meadow, though not something I would personally choose.

heliotrope · 31/12/2014 10:45

How about Merle? Means blackbird in French.

iwantgin · 31/12/2014 10:48

A lot depends on what your surname is? and where you live?

I am in Yorkshire - and a lot of the more unusual names just sound silly with a broad yorkshire accent.

Meadow would be a no from me.

From your original list I like Phoebe, Eve (rather than Evie) and Amber.

I do like Fearne (it was actually on my baby name list many years ago) but now I would just associate it with Fearne Cotton

I love Meadow! Never heard of that before. Very pretty and just reminds me of nature.
To the person that said "use a persons name and not a name of a field", names of flowers have been around as "people names" for centuries, mine included!

Not a massive fan of Phoebe as it just reminds me of Phoebe from Friends, maybe just my era.
I like Evie but I prefer Eva, just personal preference.
I don't really have an opinion on Amber or Fearne, nothing really comes to my mind when I think of these names, other than Fearne Cotton! X

daholster · 04/01/2015 22:44

My dad's man is Meadow. I love it, it reminds me of a field full of wild flowers waving in the sun... Not anybody's pubic hair!!!! Good grief some people can think of anything!

daholster · 04/01/2015 22:46

HA HA HA HAAAAAA!!! Best typo ever!

I mean, my dd's mn is Meadow! Lol!!!! Blush

Rhubarbgarden · 04/01/2015 23:06

Not keen on Meadow, though I've heard worse. I love Fern.

CrispyFern · 04/01/2015 23:11

MrsBungle · 04/01/2015 23:16
