It's not that bad but I'm not overkeen on it.

honeysucklejasmine · 01/12/2014 19:50

I love it but dh wouldn't have it.

NancyJones · 01/12/2014 22:41

The 2 I know are over 50 and they are both Sarah, known as Sally.
I definitely prefer it to Lucy though. Orla, I quite like.

Devora · 01/12/2014 22:47

I like Sally. And Sadie. And Stella. And Sara.

Not so keen on Orla.

Mutteroo · 01/12/2014 23:17

One of my least favourite 'granny names'. There are plenty of other decent older names to choose from which are better than Sally. Sorry OP

NadiaWadia · 02/12/2014 03:28

Sally is a nice, slightly retro name that is due for a revival round about now I should think. Lucy is nice too, but fairly popular if that matters to you.

Orla - no I don't get the current love for this. It doesn't have an attractive sound to it really, it's not horrible, but meh.

MaMaPo · 02/12/2014 04:19

My sister, late 30s, is a Sally. It's an unusual name, in her and any younger generation. I like it a lot. She just gets Sal for short. I also know an older Sarah who goes by Sal.

Trying to think if I know of any other Sallys! Some people have called it a granny name but I don't know anyone of that generation with that name.

Thank you for all of your opinions. What about Eleanor, nn Nell?

OP posts:
Shetland · 02/12/2014 15:40

Eleanor is lovely - and Nell is too :)

ndeplume · 02/12/2014 15:43

I have name changed for this!!

It is my name ( a 1950's child) & I loathe it with a passion. Sal is even worse!

Elanor is so much nicer!

pilates · 02/12/2014 16:01

Eleanor is lovely, but I really dislike Ellie.

Nell is nice though.

CPtart · 02/12/2014 16:28

Eleanor is lovely if not shortened. Dislike Ellie (too many) and really dislike Nell.

Feartheescalator · 02/12/2014 16:31

I love Sally and kinda wish I had used for DD2. I also know a young, cool, lovely Sally which probably makes me like the name even more. Love Lucy too

sunflower49 · 02/12/2014 16:34

I like it. But I think yes, It's because I know a Sally who I love!

Arven · 02/12/2014 16:35

i like it. it has a retro feel but it works now too

MrsMarigold · 02/12/2014 16:38

I love Sally and Sal is a really cool nickname,
I think Orla is the pits and reminds me of Oral
Lucy is better.

Castlemilk · 02/12/2014 16:38

Love it, know a fab one. To me it's outdated in a lovely way - kind of 1950s, vintage vibe - girly but from another era. I'd put it along with Nancy, Jean, Betsy etc.

Castlemilk · 02/12/2014 16:39

Oh and I know about three Orlas! That has all the makings of the next Isla...

BeccadeWinter · 02/12/2014 17:12

Quite retro but very pretty - due a comeback, in my opinion! It's cool and unfussy, but still feminine.

sallievp · 09/12/2014 21:38

I'm a Sallie and I have never really liked my name but I suddenly feel like I should defend it!!
I can see it could be quite sweet for a little girl.
I do get called Sal a lot which I really hate Hmm

TheNewStatesman · 09/12/2014 23:19

Not my favorite, but it's OK. I think Lucy is nicer, though.

Orlas seem to be popping up all over the place--I would avoid it for precisely that reason....

YouGrateMyCheese · 10/12/2014 00:14

I'm 30, I'm Sally, and I love it! There have been numerous times where I could have gone by my legal name - Sara - but I've always chosen Sally. I wear a name tag at work, and I've gotten a huge number of compliments on how "pretty" a name it is, and how you "don't hear it very often." Oddly enough I'm very rarely, if ever, called Sal.
