Hiya.
We have a top five list but none of them seem "right" for various reasons (some reasons worse than others but still feel valid)

  1. Iris - we both like it but it doesn't go brilliantly with Wilkinson surname, also (and I don't know why this bugs me so much but it does) it ends in "S" so I would be saying I'm Iris's mother, I seem to get tongue tied when I say it out loud, like Iriseseseses mother.
  1. Amber - again we both like it, but our son is called Jasper. The two people I have mentioned it to assumed I was joking and starting making comments about it being a "theme", so I dropped it, but I still like it.
  1. Jessica (or Jemima) - Really like them, but are they too similar to Jasper?
  1. Zoe - I thought it was lovely when I first thought of it, it means "life", yet the more I say it the harder/harsher it sounds. I'm looking for something quite feminine I think.
  1. Holly / Poppy / Rose - all beautiful but maybe a bit generic and over used now?

Can I get some feedback? Brutally honest please!

Jessica or Jemima

Nightstar · 28/11/2014 10:22

Hello all, thank you so much for your replies so far, they have given me food for thought.

Ivy is out, because although it is lovely, I used to work in a hospital and I only hear I.V. drip.

With Jasper and Amber both being semi-precious stones, the only two people I mentioned the name to both said stuff like "You can call the next ones Jade, Ruby and Pearl." So they made the connection straight away.

My husband has just ruled out Jessica on the grounds that he has a cousin he's close to who has a daughter called Jessica (the other daughter is called Matilda so I won't even both mentioning that to him as well!) and said he doesnt like Jemima anymore.

He wants Holly at the top of the list. I think it goes well with Jasper, but I wonder if it sounds romantic right now (in the build up to Christmas) but would be less so in February when the baby is actually due?

Question: A few people have said Iris is like Isis, which is a no-no. Can I ask why? What is wrong with Isis? Have I missed some news story about an Isis or something? I thought it was the name of an Egyptian goddess (and a river).

Also since writing, we have had a Poppy move in next door, ruling that out, and my annoying husband has said that if we use Rose, which was my Grandmother's name, then we have to use his Grandmothers name as well, which was Doris!!

So now it goes:
Holly
Iris
Zoe

Why don't I feel better at having narrowed it down?

I like Zoe the best, although I prefer Chloe to Zoe!

Artandco · 28/11/2014 11:28

Isis = Islamic state terrorists currently

Holly is nice though and fine to use all year imo

moxon · 28/11/2014 11:33

Iris sounds good IMO, also with the surname. I'd be one of those Amber-Jasper theme people...

Poofus · 28/11/2014 11:36

Iris sounds great with the surname and is a lovely name.

I really wouldn't use Amber as it does sound like you're going for a theme.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 28/11/2014 14:34

I personally think you've been left with the best 3 choices OPSmile

NadiaWadia · 28/11/2014 14:35

Zoe and Jessica are beautiful.

TempsPerdu · 28/11/2014 15:22

I'm a Zoe, so slightly biased - I love my name, and it seems to have aged much better than most of my friends' names (I'm mid-30s now).

Quite like both Holly and Iris, although I'm not sure either of them stands out to me - Holly seems 'prettier', but Iris is more substantial and sophisticated somehow. (Sorry, I realise that's not terribly helpful!). Both much better than Amber imo, and Jessica is too common, so I agree with your shortlist Smile

Dogsmom · 28/11/2014 20:31

Iris is getting popular, it may well be the new Lily or Ava, the last two girls born recently that I've met have been given the name and this thread seems to indicate it is likely to be used a lot.

Isis are all over the news, Google it and you will come up with hundreds of recent stories about them.

ICanTotallyDance · 28/11/2014 21:10

Iris is not too similar to ISIS in my opinion, but yes, ISIS is a terrorist group.

Don't worry too much for now though if the baby is due in Feb. You have plenty of time to mull over everything and to be honest, I think your shortlist has the nicest names!

myotherusernameisbetter · 28/11/2014 21:31

I like Zoe best from your remaining 3.

How about Zara which is similar? or Heidi instead of Holly?

elotrolado · 28/11/2014 22:05

Always liked Iris! Sounds lovely with Jasper.

How about

Jasper and Tabitha
Jasper and Martha

looki · 29/11/2014 01:12

I like Zoe, Iris and Rose........Rose is a quintessential English name. I really wouldn't put Poppy or Holly in the same category.

GreatAuntDinah · 29/11/2014 13:37

If you like jessica and Jemima how about Jessamine?

TsukuruTazaki · 01/12/2014 13:21

Holly is gorgeous, absolutely love it. I don't think its cutesy or too popular. Iris would be my second choice.

HollyJollyXmas · 01/12/2014 13:27

They're all fine! I would personally avoid Jessica or Jemima, as not a fan of alliteration in siblings names. But all names are nice enough.

I like Amber a lot and don't think its corny to have another gem stone name. It wouldn't even have occurred to me until you said it.

Nightstar · 04/12/2014 23:27

At least for now, she is named:

Holly Clementine Wilkinson

Does that sound okay? We still have three months to change our minds, lol

bugsyburge · 04/12/2014 23:44

Holly is an excellent name choice, well done Smile

Toucanet · 06/12/2014 01:52

Like Iris and Holly myself though been thinking Holly is a bit common & Iris only a middle name, but that's partly down to our surname.
Amber I also like but unfortunately reminds me of I think it was a golden retriever in a James Herriot book that had a bad case of sarcastic mange!

Toucanet · 06/12/2014 01:52

sarcoptic mange, damn autocorrect!

Toucanet · 06/12/2014 01:55

Oops OP I missed your last posting. HCW is a nice combo, will never be misspelt and with Clementine I'd say you're clearly a posher family anyway! Holly Wilkinson also sounds good when you say it.

ICanTotallyDance · 06/12/2014 21:22

Jasper and Holly is lovely and Holly Clementine is gorgeous.

Of course, you may change your mind later but if that is the name you choose in the end then it's an excellent decision, in my opinion.

Nightstar · 07/12/2014 18:59

I spat coffee over my keyboard when I read Sarcastic Mange, I'm still laughing now. That should totally be a thing!
