Will everyone assume 'Elsa' has been copied from Frozen?

I've always planned on having an Elsa if I had a girl, it's a family name and I love old fashioned names.

But is there going to be a rush of Elsas now? I hate the idea of having a trendy baby name.

Would you assume a mum was following a Frozen trend if you heard of a baby Elsa?

Yes, this year I would. But if you love the name go for it. Really no child ever suffered because there were a few others in their year with the same name. And in a few years time everyone will have forgotten Frozen and it won't remind people of that anymore.

I'd think lion.

I nearly called dd Elsa 13 years ago. But as a midwife I'm noticing a few baby Elsas......not many. But a year ago I'd never known one.

I think it was ripe for a surge anyway as people hunted for a less popular Isla.

I am afraid that I both would think of Frozen and think it could be about to shoot up the charts.

Oh damn! Not what I wanted to hear!

I love the lion reference- just not the Frozen reference.

I suppose at least Elsa is a good character so it wouldn't be SO bad.

Never heard of it before the film. Also in this house its always said El Sah (do you wanna build a snowman...) which gets a bit irritating!

It would be an issue for 5 years, tops. And when she's an adult, or even a pre-teen it sure as hell won't matter! If you love the name, have family links or just want to use it go ahead! For a few months you might have 'like the film' (but generally only idiots ask stuff like that) and then it will be over. I am better people will still use Anna.

Just to add, the Frozen connection wouldn't put me off using it. The possibility it is the next Isla might though as I prefer less popular names if possible.

I know a lovely baby Elsa who must be just pre Frozen (as it were). I think now people might assume a Frozen inspiration but my guess is when she's older the association between the year of her birth and a particular Disney film won't be nearly so obvious.

Also Elsa is the one Disney heroine I could probably stand as a namesake :)

What about Elsie? There seem to be a few of them around and I rather prefer it to Elsa to be honest.

This is my problem too. I had Elsa on my list for my last DC pre-Frozen, but we had a little boy, so obviously didn't use it. I heard it on the programme Mistresses a few years ago and instantly loved it. But now with DC due Jan, I don't know how many ''Oh like, from Frozen'' comments I could actually take. But I don't like any other names as much either. We have Martha as a back-up.

Elsa is my favourite but just really don't want a popular / trendy name

My DS has a little 4yo pal called elsa. I like it - it will be associated with the film now, but in five years time probably won't? It is a normal name too, it's not Ariel. We don't think of all 15 yo Jasmines as being copied from Aladdin?

That's a good point bigkids.

I suppose I don't mind the Frozen connection as much as the thought that it will be a popular name. I don't like the idea that there will be more than one of the name in a class.
That's what drew me to Elsa in the first place is that it's rare.

I've just looked up the stats and Elsa has been steadily increasing in popularity over the last 10 years (it was number 177 in 2012 so I wouldn't say it's rare but definitely not popular. It was barely in the top 500 in 2001 so it has made a fairly big leap). Apparently, Elsie is one of the highest climbers from between 2003-2013 according to the ONS site and is now in the top 50. If you don't want a trendy name personally I wouldn't use it. I do think Elsa is going to rise, maybe not to the extent there's more than one in a class but what with the popularity of Elsie and similar sounding names like Ella and Isla it does sound quite "trendy".

But if you really, really love Elsa you might be able to overlook all that.

I doubt people genuinely name their children after Disney characters so there probably won't be a rash of them but people probably will think "oh, like in Frozen", when they hear it. Not a dealbreaker if you love the name imo. My dsis is Ailsa, if that works for you? Also Elsie, Ella, Elspeth possible alternatives?
