DH and I are expecting DC1 in two weeks. We don't know if it is a boy or a girl. We have a short list of boys' names but are really going round in circles with girls names! I think we need a bit of external thought or inspiration please!

These are the options that are currently on our list, but neither of us are really feeling the love for anything in particular. Any thoughts or other suggestions for us? Thanks Smile.

Susannah Caroline
Anna Caroline
Hannah Caroline
Elizabeth Joanne (Beth)
Isabella Joanne
Hazel Joanne
Faye Joanne
Lillian Joanne
Isla Joanne
Lucy Joanne

Middle names are fixed for family reasons. We have a 3 syllable surname beginning with Mc.

Vetoed for various reasons so far-
Clara Joanne
Elise Joanne
Alice Joanne
Leah Joanne
Emily Joanne
Emma Joanne
Edith Joanne
Iona Joanne

Would you consider using both names - one as a first and one as a second name? Caroline Joanne? or a variation on one or other name? Carolyn or Johanna?

There are no names on your list I dislike, but my favourites are Anna, Hannah, Isla and Lucy.

I prefer Caroline to Joanne personally, but if the names mean something to you then that's more important than the opinion of a stranger on the internet Smile

I definitely agree with you on preferring Caroline to Joanne. Neither of us are mad about Joanne, but the Jo part of it is from the same person as Caroline is- as in Caroline or Jo is in relation to one family member, and Anne is is relation to the other person, ideally we want to use a name which puts both together somehow. Joanna is pretty actually, we hadn't thought of that. I am not sure about Carolyn, but switching it round to Caroline Anne might also work.

Thanks, I will discuss that with DH - really useful to have other thoughts when we are going around in circles!

From your list I love Hannah, Isabella and Lucy, and also really like Isla and Hazel.

I prefer Caroline to Joanne, but prefer Joanna to Caroline!

Sophronia · 24/10/2014 22:56

Susannah Caroline is beautiful.

moxon · 25/10/2014 07:28

Johanna is nicer IMO too. Or Joan, maybe, as compromise? But like Caroline too. Something quirkier, because it is a middle name so not really used except on official docs: Carolanna? Carolina? Last one sounds russian-y regal!
Otherwise I like Susannah and Anna Caroline, and Lucy Caroline.

barmybunting · 25/10/2014 09:32

Moxon, Joanne is the compromise to get away from Joan as that is the actual 'Jo' name we are linking with Anne Smile.

Sounds like the Caroline options are much preferred to the than Joanne options- DH seems to be open to Joanna as alternative so that thankfully is a consideration now.

Thanks everyone!

Isabella Caroline (unless you already ruled out this combo).

Lunastarfish · 26/10/2014 20:26

I think Lucy Joanne works rather well

SurfsUp1 · 27/10/2014 09:12

Ooh much prefer Joan (as a middle name) to Joanne!
Susannah Joan would be fab!

Are you bothered about popularity?

From your list Isla, Lucy and Isabella are far more popular than the others, although Lillian may end up a Lily which are two a penny. I quite like Hazel or Elizabeth, not keen on Faye.

barmybunting · 27/10/2014 18:58

Stokey, yes, I am concerned about popularity, DH is not but it does put me off certain names. Annoyingly, I am more familiar with the Scottish popularity of the names as we lived there until last year- and Isabella for example was no 43 odd last year, which I am fine with- but the popularity is very different in England so I need to remember that bit! Isla is a concern because of that, Lucy less so as I think it has been around for longer.
