I love the name Evelyn, but pronounced Ev-a-lin. I don't like the eve-lyn pronunciation, but I want to shorten it to eve or evie, makes no sence really...

How would you pronounce it? Iv been told that eve-lyn is the male version of the name.

Are they're other names where evie can be used as short?

I would pronounce it Ev-a-Lin. Lovely name Smile

The recent Mumsnet most popular names list puts it at 45. And on another list I googled it is a name getting more popular ( last year 57, the year before 65). With members of my family called this I have noticed it is quite common.

My nan had a friend called Evelyn-pronounced Ev-lyn.
Evangeline also can have the nn Evie ,Eva .....

WittyUsername102 · 14/10/2014 21:44

I hear both pretty equally but I typically say ev-a-lyn.

Shortening to Evie could be Evangeline or Genevieve.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/10/2014 21:52

My DD is kind of a halfway between Ev-lyn and Eva-lyn. She's also Evie.

It's a beautiful name.

ACheesePuff · 14/10/2014 21:56

Eve-lyn. Ev-a -lyn is ok too.

Definitely don't go with Eve-a-lyn, too similar to Evil-lyn

mathanxiety · 14/10/2014 22:00

I am Irish and I would always say Evv-a-lyn.
I always thought the Eeve-lyn pronunciation was for a man (and very rare nowadays) as in Evelyn Waugh.

Other options might be:
Evaleen/Eveline
Evangeline
Evgenia

Josie314 · 14/10/2014 22:28

My DD is Ev-a-lyn, but we call her Ee-vee. Hasn't been a problem. Although some people do call her Eh-vee if they see it written down.

I love this name and will use it of i am lucky enough to have a girl. i don't mind if it is getting more popular. In my class at school we had Hannah x2, Sophie x2, Holly x2, Charlotte x3, Adam x2 and Peter x2 and it never bothered anyone. That's what surnames are for! Wink

I sat Ev-a-lyn and will nn Evvy. Smile

DragonFlyx · 15/10/2014 08:14

Evvy is a lovely nn! She's been evie since we knew she was a girl, my daughter named her and it stuck. But we didn't want her actual name to be evie though because we're awkward lol

I'm a teacher so names are extra hard. Never met a nasty Evie. Both beautiful hard working girls. Smile

honeysucklejasmine · 15/10/2014 16:01

And thank you!

DragonFlyx · 15/10/2014 16:14

I suggested using Evvy or Evvie as a nn for Evelyn and oh said he'd never heard it before and sounds perfect and different :)

We have an Evelyn (Ev ah Lynn) shortened mostly to Evie (eee-vie) but I have recently started calling her Evy ( Ev-ee ,rhyme with heavy) which is how the French pronounce it apparently and stops a lot of the eve Lyn / Ev Lyn issues although I haven't had too much trouble with it being mispronounced to be honest.
I adore her name and get positive comments all the time. She is 2 and I am yet to meet another Evelyn (we live in east London)
