Monty...

We love Monty but there aren't any where we are and we worry it might be seen as a bit pet-namey? Neither of us really like Montgomery or Montague.

What do you think? Any similar names? We like Jack and Rory but they are far too popular around here now. We also like Jasper but we have an -er surname and don't like the rhyming...

Any thoughts would be welcome!

Hm trouble is we don't much like Montgomery or Montague, I don't mind Beaumont cos then he could choose Monnty or Beau (which I like as a boy's name anyway), but dh is not keen. Montaine and Montaro are alternatives but not really sure. And they all just get no from dh!

Am in two minds about Jonty. Some days I think it's cool, others not so much and I panic he would get picked on... Maybe it's a bit posh and wet sounding? Don't want to offend any Jontys or parents of Jontys!!! But then again, right now I think it's quite cool.

Yes I see where you are coming from but personally I would not give a contraction of a name as a 'proper' name if you see what I mean? It would be like having Kate which was not a contraction of Katherine, Kathleen etc. It's not quite right is it?

For what it's worth I love the name Montague shortened to Monty but don't care for Montgomery, Montaine or Montaro.

Shame that you think that Jonathan/Jonty sounds 'posh and wet' as I think they are lovely names! I teach two Jontys who are great and whilst they could possibly be accused of being 'posh' (by people who think that way) I would definitely not describe either of them as 'wet'!

fizzymittens · 10/10/2014 11:25

Sorry, I meant that you are worried that others may perceive the names as 'posh and wet' not that you think so yourself.

Love Monty

Legionofboom · 10/10/2014 11:40

I would suggest Montmorency but that really is a dog's name.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 10/10/2014 11:44

Monty (for Montgomery) is lovely.
I like Hugo too. It's got a similar feel to it, in my mind.

daholster · 10/10/2014 12:12

I like Hugo. Dh does not. Why is it always the blokes saying no?! They are such a pain! And don't come up with any good ideas themselves...

Will keep Jonty on the list for discussion fizzy . Dh knows one of those which might help! Posh I don't mind too much. Once upon a time people thought Holly was a bit posh! Which I am not...

I like Monty but would give him a longer 'proper' name. I also like Hugo and Jasper or how about Quentin?

daholster · 10/10/2014 16:04

Love Jasper... But -er surname so it doesn't work really, don't like the rhyme sadly. Personally not keen on Quentin. A names just don't do it for me!

Think my Great Uncle Monty was Lamont. Is that an option?

daholster · 12/10/2014 21:50

Interesting idea, good strong name Cousin, but for some reason my head automatically thinks American?! I know, I want the moon on a stick Sad . Thanks for all your help everyone!

Montego?

Sophronia · 13/10/2014 00:45

Indiana can be a boys name so maybe Montana could too? Or Monterrey?

Legionofboom · 13/10/2014 10:57

But surely if you are always going to call him Monty then it doesn't really matter that much if you don't love the full name.

A friend's son is always known exclusively by his nickname though he has a 'proper' name on his birth certificate that his mother doesn't really like. The full name has been used about once a year since he was born.

TinyTear · 13/10/2014 11:00

I know a nearly 3yo Monty

usualnamechanger · 13/10/2014 11:01

Monty python and Montgomery burns.
