Boys name quandary!

I have DS1 named Alexander (nn: Alex) which was incredibly difficult to settle on (we almost didn't make the cut off date for registration!).

Have decided to get a head start this time round and am trying to come up with another boys name for DS2 due in February.

We are hoping for a name that reflects Greek heritage and goes well with a German surname.

My challenge with boy's names is that they seem to either be completely ordinary classical (Richard, Thomas, Henry, Charles) or way out there trendy (Hunter, Ace, Brody).

So I thought I'd focus on something Greek classical to go with Alexander (which has roots in Greek Classicism, and there was Alexander the Great).

So, I ruled out the super long names (Archimedes, Aristophanes etc) and came up with.... Atreus.

Atreus means "fearless" and can also be Atreo in Spanish. Can't help thinking of Atreyu from the never ending story though.

I suspect the name may be out of the comfort zone for most (especially when considered alongside Alexander) but thought I would canvas some opinion.....

I don't mind unusual names but I'm not sure about that one tbh.

Nikolas/Nicholas maybe?

squoosh · 24/09/2014 12:18

I'm not crazy about Atreus.

What about Hector or Damon? They fit the Greek brief but don't jar too much with Alexander.

squoosh · 24/09/2014 12:24

Is Linus Greek? I think that's kind of cool in a nerdy-chic way.

myotherusernameisbetter · 24/09/2014 12:24

Dorian?
Galen?
Gregor?
Kester?
Myles?

Ooh, Damon was one I hadn't thought of!

I mentioned Atreus to Alex.
He keeps calling baby Trey now ??

Now you've said it, Alex and Trey do kind of go together.

AberdeenAngusina · 24/09/2014 12:39

We have an Alexander (Alex) and Hector was on our shortlist for DC2.

Philip
Ptolemy

rubyboo2 · 24/09/2014 14:03

I used to teach a boy called Aristotle Grin .

Stardustshaper · 24/09/2014 14:33

Ptolemy is kinda cute - but think that the silent P will be a lifetime of teasing - and goodness knows what that abbreviates too.

I have a cousin called Aristotle - but the big grin after your comment confirms my fears that it's just weird to call your child that Wink.

Kinda like Hercules (especially if your son lands up with the build of a bean pole!).

Sigh.

what sort of secondary school are they likely to go to? Are they likely to get bullied?

DanyStormborn · 25/09/2014 20:57

How about Atticus - it has Greek heritage and as it was the name of the main character in To Kill a Mockingbird people are quite familiar with it.

BlueChampagne · 26/09/2014 21:59

Slightly left field - Troy?
Andreas?
Matthew?
Marius?

Ahardyfool · 26/09/2014 22:03

I like it. Love all Greek classical names. However, something does make me think 'orifice' when I say it... We have Mjolnir

Stardustshaper · 27/09/2014 09:12

Well, have no idea about secondary school yet, but would hope he becomes whatever name he is and is a cool, resilient kid not picked on by bullies. Any parents wish really.

Another one suggesting Troy Grin

Castlemilk · 27/09/2014 15:14

Hmm, Alexander is so trad and yet versatile - I'd probably think it was quite unfair to give the other one a really way out name.

Sebastian would be good

also Dominic?

moxon · 27/09/2014 15:18

Google Greek gods. Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/09/2014 16:09

It's awful, imho. Hector is nice though.

fuzzpig · 27/09/2014 16:21

I like it but I agree that next to Alexander it seems too out there in comparison.

I LOVE Trey though.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 27/09/2014 16:58

Tristan?

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 27/09/2014 17:01

I love the sound of Atreus (classics A level, no higher) but don't think it'd work here.

Aherdofmims · 27/09/2014 19:48

I know of a Greek Marcos which is nice.
