I prefer Joshua to Riley.

Gemerama82 · 18/09/2014 22:24

I'd say you are the one giving birth so he needs to accommodate your preferences, not the other way round! If it has to be one though I'd say Joshua. Don't go with Riley, it's awful.

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 22:28

Thanks I'll tell him that :-)

I don't think there's any problem with two 'ee' sounds at the end of the names. Two of my children and many sibling pairs I know share that name ending (eg Lily and Charlie, Henry and Rosie) and it's perfectly fine!

I personally think Harry, Toby, Max, Oscar and Jacob go really nicely with Charlie

Use Riley or Joshua as a middle name and find a name you both like for first name. You shouldn't have to accept a name that you don't really like. (I agree with most pp that Joshua is much better than Riley - it would have been on our shortlist but we didn't want such a popular name.)

TsukuruTazaki · 19/09/2014 01:35

Joshua is v nice

Some other suggestions that come to mind
Harrison
Ellis
Zachary
Jack
Reid
Sullivan

Joshua by a long way. I really dislike the name Riley - it does seem very popular atm in RL though so maybe it's just me...

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 19/09/2014 20:16

Joshua. it is lovely. Smile Don't really like Riley at all personally.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 19/09/2014 20:18

...and I think Riley and Charlie are far too similar. Smile

Fairylea · 19/09/2014 20:18

It seems Riley is a much hated name on mumsnet but I love it. In our area (norfolk) it's become almost a classic name and lots of different people from all walks of life seem to be using it. It is very, very popular though!

I like both Riley and Joshua. I think Joshua goes better with charlie because of the ee sound at the end.

ataposaurus · 19/09/2014 20:32

Riley is terrible and a bit (dare I say it) common.

Joshua is not my favourite name but much nicer. Am surprised it seems quite unpopular on here too. I think it has probably had its popularity spike around 10 years ago, and definitely do not encounter many Joshuas in my children's age group (baby to 5) so I wouldn't say it is too popular (Reuben seems to be the current in name around here!)

JapaneseMargaret · 19/09/2014 21:06

He can't insist on calling the baby a name you don't like, any more than you can.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 20/09/2014 00:06

Don't like either, both horrible tbh but if they were the only 2 names in the world I'd choose Riley.

Surfsup1 · 20/09/2014 07:36

Hmm, I'd go for Joshua over Riley. Having 2 "y" sounds at the end could sound a bit cutsie (I'm assuming your Charlie is a boy?)

What about
Lachlan, Hamish, Cameron (I think I have Scotland on the brain!)

James, Alexander, Timothy,Andrew (Andy)

charlieheather · 21/09/2014 18:30

I like Freddie with Charlie Smile Riley and Joshua are very popular! I like Charlie because it is traditional. Maybe Edward or Laurence?

mathanxiety · 21/09/2014 21:26

Riley is horrible.

How about:
Caleb
Ethan
Mason
Noah
Dylan
Logan
Austin
Jackson
Lucas
Evan
Wyatt

avocadoadvantage · 21/09/2014 21:35

From a teacher's perspective: Joshua/josh is very common in primary school at the moment. Riley is the kind of name that Katie Hopkins would sneer over- sorry!

usualsuspect333 · 21/09/2014 21:54

Who gives a toss what KH thinks.

Although there are a few KH types on this thread by the looks of it.

PrimalLass · 21/09/2014 21:55

Joshua.

I know two Rileys. One is a girl and the other is a dog.

sallysimpson · 21/09/2014 21:57

Joshua!

TeaAndALemonTart · 21/09/2014 22:01

KH is a total cunt, who gets paid for being a nasty cunt. I think her opinion is off little value to anyone.

Although I loved that she slagged off children named after places and has a DD called India. Not the brightest candle on the cake that one.

TeaAndALemonTart · 21/09/2014 22:02

*of.

I type fuck off so often my kindle automatically corrected it for me. Smile

avocadoadvantage · 21/09/2014 22:18

Oh heck! Please don't think I value KH's opinion. Shock Quite the opposite! But the OP did ask for opinions and names are very emotive.

SunshineAndShadows · 21/09/2014 23:29

Riley. Much more cool.
Lightning Seeds

Joshua will I naturally be Josh so only use that if you like the nn
I'd agree with finding a name you both like

cherrybombxo · 22/09/2014 15:46

I know a few Rileys and all of their parents are really chavvy (though I know I shouldn't say that...!)

I love Joshua and the only reason I removed it from the top slot of my shortlist is because my older cousin had a baby and called him Joshua.
