Put off by someone having ‘used’ your name?

My OH and I have been going back on forth on names since the start. Now 33 weeks, he’s set on Melody. I do like it, it’s not my absolute favourite but I do like it a lot. The only reason I’d discounted it in the past is that a couple I (only vaguely now) know used it for their little one. They are more Facebook friends than anything else now, but we have a lot of mutual friends and I know I’ll get at least a couple of comments on it when announced.

How put off are you by someone else having ‘used’ your name? Am I just being silly? Surely it’ll become our baby’s name within a couple of weeks anyway. All comments appreciated.

I haven't hear Melody in years!

I think if it's close family or friends it's something to take into consideration - but not if it's only people you vaguely know.

It will definitely become your DD's name in no time :)

You could also consider similar names such as Elodie?

Legionofboom · 27/08/2014 11:59

Goodness if you couldn't use any names that had been used by anyone you even vaguely knew, it would be just about impossible to come up with a name.

I wouldn't let the prospect of a couple of comments on Facebook put you off.

sister, cousins, close friends - I wouldn't do it.

anyone else - I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Depends.
If it's say Kim Kardashian or Nigel Farrage or I don't know, anyone from TOWIE, then yes, it would.

We are TTC our first and our top girls name is Elodie and has been for 2 years. Never met one in RL but know it's on the rise and am sure someone we know will use it before us and I think I'd worry people thought we were copying. Depending on how close the people in question are I may go with a different name if it was me.

Castlemilk · 30/08/2014 10:16

To be honest, with a name like Melody it WOULD put me off. It's pretty rare and I think you would get a lot of people assuming you'd copied.

Sophie, Emily, Alice etc. - not at all!

However I may be influenced by the fact that I don't rate Melody at all. If it were a strong beautiful but also rare name, I'd probably be saying, go for it, that name could do with a few more representatives...!

... and just to say, first alernative that popped into my head (if you were looking for one...) was Melissa - also rare, quite similar, but I'd say in a completely different class - really beautiful name.

Have you considered Elodie? Lovely classic French name
