Ok, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and I'm having yet another wobble on my dd2bs name! Long story short is I've always wanted a girl called Tabitha or Autumn but can't have Autumn due to dh surname being gale just not happening, so when the unbelilable happened we knew what she was called everyone knows her name including ds who is 3, I have told all my friends with mixed reactions from how unusual, how pretty to that's awful i was bullied at school and my initals spelt fck so was cal,ed fanny to f*cky and a few people have raised the point of her nickname we were going to shorten it to Tabbie but ppl have said she might end up being called tabbie cat or worse pussy, my dh says if they are going to bully they will do it whatever but I know what it was like for me can I really put my daughter through it too? I also thought of changing the spelling or coming up with a new nameand keeping Tabitha as a middle name we call her or is that confusing too! HELP

I don't think Tabitha is a particularly bully-able name. It could become Pussy or Flabby Tabby or shabby Tabby or something, but any name can be turned into something horrible if you try hard enough. I think it will be ok.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/08/2014 01:17

I think you're over thinking things but so understand why.

Tabitha is a lovely name.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/08/2014 01:19

I agree you're overthinking
If you go down that route no name will work
Tabitha is a perfectly respectable name

iK8 · 05/08/2014 01:20

Tabis is a great nickname for Tabitha.

ZenNudist · 05/08/2014 01:24

I don't think its that bad. If kids wanted to bully someone they could regardless. I think the cat thing us reaching.

I think you shouldn't have told people the name til she was here (helpful). People are insensitive when it's not yet a persons name just a foetus's name!

Stick to your guns. If anyone else is rude call them on it. "I will be naming a person this. It's a real name. It's not up for debate. I find your comments hurtful etc."

lettertoherms · 05/08/2014 01:24

Tabitha is a pretty name, not unusual, it won't be a point of bullying any more than any other name. You are thinking too much!

My parents gave me a very plain name rather than their first choice, as they thought the first choice, Olivia, was too easy to tease about. To this day I prefer that name to my own, they should have used it!

DitzyDonkey · 05/08/2014 01:33

Tabitha is a beautiful name!

EverythingCounts · 05/08/2014 01:44

There will be plenty more unusual names in her class at school than that. Pick the name you like and ignore everyone else.

Sophronia · 05/08/2014 03:17

Tabitha is a lovely name.

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 05/08/2014 03:44

I went to school with a Tabitha, she wasn't bullied and I never heard anyone call her Pussy

I also think Autumn Gale is an exceptional name!! Grin

Coughle · 05/08/2014 04:08

If you change now you will always regret not calling your beautiful daughter your dream name. She IS Tabitha Smile

mathanxiety · 05/08/2014 06:02

Tabitha is a lovely name, most likely not the most unusual in any class she will be in, and your DH is right about bullies.

Don't change the spelling!

Time to stand up and tell the naysayers to can it. Show your DS and future DD how to deal with people who want to walk on you.

frankiebuns · 05/08/2014 07:46

Thankyou so much! I was sat there last night and was in a quandry, there's no other name that comes close or id prefer.

Tabitha is a lovely name. We have a 14 year old Tabitha in our family and she's never had any problems.

yawningbear · 05/08/2014 08:01

Tabitha is gorgeous. Stick to your guns and use it!

sashh · 05/08/2014 10:39

My parents were put off the name 'Johnathan' 50 years ago because of the nicknames people said he would have.

My mum still has regrets.

I also know a toddler Tabitha, beautiful name, go for it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/08/2014 10:45

George and Tabitha work really well as sibling names (I know it isn't the be all and end all but it is a plus point).

WowserBowser · 05/08/2014 10:45

I really like it. I have never thought about it being a name that would be picked on.

Do you like Matilda?

Laska42 · 05/08/2014 10:48

Autum Gale is so brilliant .. id go for it (I know a Theresa Green)

UnrelatedToElephants · 05/08/2014 13:20

Tabitha is lovely - and I think Tabby Cat is adorable too. Tabitha Catherine?

frankiebuns · 05/08/2014 20:05

shes going to be Tabitha Rachel Kaitlyn i was going to switch it an it be Tabitha Kaitlyn Rachel, but thought of tabby cat! im tempted with Autumn Gale but technically shed have to be summer as shes a summer baby but with this hurricane on its way we coulsd easily call her Summer gale as a nickname

Bit of a curve ball, but have you considered Talitha? The nn for that would be Tally / Tilly which is less likely to be made fun of than Tabby I would have thought.
