Does anyone have experience of changing a child's name by deed poll?

I am considering adding an additional middle name to each of my children's names - my maiden name. As they are aged 6 and 2 I have to do this by deed poll. It occurred to me that if they need to prove their identity in the future it may be a nuisance for them to have to produce both birth certificate and deed poll, but then if it is only adding a name and not changing the existing names perhaps a birth certificate on its own would be OK.

Can anyone help?

My son's name was changed by DPollto add my name and apart from applying for his next passport neither he nor I have ever been asked for the DP document in 15 years.

OK thanks. I imagine adding a name is more straightforward than changing it to something completely different.

That is what I did- I added my surname to his name, but there is no difference to the process nor when you would be required to produce it- a change is a change is a change.

I added middle names for DS1 and DS2. I only ever needed the deep poll cert, to apply for their passports. I have since renewed their passports and didn't need the deep poll certs again.
They can use their passports as ID in the future, so I doubt they will ever use their birth certs/deed poll certs.

Same here, changed dd1 name by deed poll to make surname hyphenated incorporating mine and her dad's surname, when we split.

Only ever needed cert for passport application, and took it to open her first bank account. Haven't needed it since. No problems x

I thought you couldn't use a deed poll under 18

I think you can just add a maiden name by starting to use it.

You dont actually need to do anything other than add the name. If you want evidence of the change then you as the person with PR can do a deed poll (that was the route I took on the advice of my solicitor).

I changed DS's surname and added a middle name at the same time. Other than when I was notifying people of the change I haven't had to show his document x
