Baby is due in a week and we're still trying to get a proper shortlist. Will probably pick properly once they're here. Opinions would be great as would suggestions of similar names (especially boys where we're extra undecided!).

Girls:

Iris
Sylvia
Saffron
Florence
Mathilda
Evelyn

Boys:

Alexander
Theodore
Wilfred
Oscar
Sebastian
Arthur
Heath

We mostly like pretty traditional stuff and are prefer full names rather than nicknames. Help please!

If you want your child to be called their full name don't go for Alexander or Theodore. Oscar might be your best bet on the boys to stay in its fulness. Same for Iris and Sylvia. But my friend Sylvia became known as "Silly" at our school.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 19/07/2014 14:16

Oops, we don't mind nicknames just prefer a full name to start with. Happy for him to be Theo, Ted etc irl.

Beautiful names. Like iris and Florence from your girls list and adore Wilfred from your boys list. Wilf is such a cool name .

Superrhan · 19/07/2014 15:44

A vote for Saffron. I think Saffy is really cute too!

And Theodore/Theo.

Pangaea · 19/07/2014 15:50

Iris and Heath are my faves.

Heath especially. Love Heath.

shystie · 19/07/2014 16:41

Iris and Sebastion easily.

Leeds2 · 19/07/2014 18:23

Iris is my favourite.

Thanks, any more suggestions? We're not sharing in real life so I'm really interested to hear people's thoughts! We want a slightly unusual girl's name but for boys I'll be happy if he's not one of 5 in his class.

We live in London if that makes a difference.

Can I ask why you would allow popularity to vary by gender?

Genuinely interested, never heard anybody say that before.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2014 20:59

Really like Florence, Syliva and Evelyn.

Wilfred, Oscar, Sebastian = nice. Heath seems v different to your other choices. Not fond of it, sorry.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 19/07/2014 21:55

Pangea guess I just think there's a much smaller pool of nice, traditional boys names to pick from. Feel like there are a lot more choices for the girls before you hit too trendy and try-hard. Dont know if that makes sense?

Pangaea · 19/07/2014 23:54

Completely sensible! Was genuinely just being a bit nosey!

Gingerjv · 20/07/2014 13:10

Oscar, Arthur and Heath are the best! Florence is the best for girl.

Knew I shouldn't have picked a sunny weekend for this thread! Any more thoughts or suggestions?

I love Florence for a girl. I know it's reasonably popular but it's lovely. And Flo or Flossie are very cute nn. For a boy, I like Alexander and Sebastian a lot. We have similar taste in names and we decided exactly the same thing about different popularity of names between boys and girls. Congratulations! Let us know what you decide. X

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/07/2014 19:26

Love Alexander and Florence.

SanityClause · 20/07/2014 19:28

Sylvia and Theodore.

Delphiniumsblue · 20/07/2014 19:30

Alexander and Florence.

FixItUpChappie · 20/07/2014 19:31

I've always had a soft spot for Sebastian. My DH vetoed it off my list for Ds2. Mathilda is the closest I like for a girl but personally I prefer Matilda.

TheBloodManCometh · 20/07/2014 19:38

My cousin is called Wilfred and he gets a huge amount of stick against his name. Including (secretly) amongst the family. (Not me!)

Kantha · 20/07/2014 19:55

Iris and Sebastian

Not Alexander. It's a lovely name but in some places there will be 5 in a class and in other places there won't be.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 20/07/2014 19:57

Wilfred is my DH's grandad's name but I'm the one who loves it. Think he's pretty much vetoed it now sadly. What stick does your cousin get the blood man?

Iris or Sylvia, and Wilfred.
