Opinions on the name Delilah...

Family opinion is divided...

DH has no strong opinions but is being put off as my Mum insists it's a 'strippers' name...

We have no religious inclinations so the biblical side and connotations don't bother me at all, but wondered what others thought?

This is DC5 and certainly our final offspring! I can't find another name I love even half as much but am worried the name may not be thought of as highly by others as by myself!

Honest opinions please Mumsnet :)

I love it

RufusTheReindeer · 17/07/2014 10:23

It's not a stripper name!!

It's a tom jones name Grin

I like it but she might get the song Delilah sung to her a lot

How attached are you to the De? Lilah is a nice name

RAFWife12 · 17/07/2014 10:27

It's not a name I would chose, but I do like it!
I think the "stripper" connotations are a bit outdated now.

Clearlymisunderstood · 17/07/2014 10:28

Love it, I wanted it forDD2 but we have a Lyla in the family so too close

Legionofboom · 17/07/2014 10:29

Delilah is not a stripper name at all.

I agree it is very tied up with the Tom Jones song but that might be because I don't know anyone in RL with the name to connect it to anything but the song.

firesidechat · 17/07/2014 10:43

All through her life she will come across random fools who will sing "My, my, my Delilah" at her.

My name was once referenced in a popular song. It was wearing trying to smile politely while some joker sang it at me. Gosh, how original, no one's done that before!

Apart from that, I think Delilah is lovely.

bouquetofpencils · 17/07/2014 11:00

Delilah is delightful.

Other ideas

Dahlia is darling.

Delphine is divine.

MrsMarigold · 17/07/2014 11:03

temptress.

AnythingNotEverything · 17/07/2014 11:09

I love it, but I knew we'd shorten it to "Dee" which I didn't like at all.

I love Lilah too.

Hakluyt · 17/07/2014 11:10

"We have no religious inclinations so the biblical side and connotations don't bother me at all, but wondered what others thought?"

Trouble is, you don't- but she will constantly meet other people who do.

weatherall · 17/07/2014 11:13

It's a difficult name.

It sounds lovely but it has too many negative connotations for a lot of people.

I think you'd have to be quite brave to go for it.

but maybe with 4 older siblings she won't have to worry about playground bullying Grin

SillyTillyTilly · 17/07/2014 14:15

I've heard people refer to it as a stripper name Sad

I personally dislike the potential shortenings of 'Del' and 'Lilah'

I do like Dolores (I know that's not very similar suggestion)

mojojo29 · 17/07/2014 14:22

I love Delilah, its cool and quirky... and Lilah for short is very cute.

Makes me think of the song Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's. :) x

GinAndToast · 17/07/2014 14:26

BOTH my children have names that are both unusual and heavily feature in famous songs.

Nobody has ever sung it to them or us yet, 12 years later.

Fwiw, Delilah was my original choice for DD2 and I love it :-)

Stripper, sorry

Lila/Lilah otoh as pp said - love love love it Smile

RufusTheReindeer · 17/07/2014 14:46

Lilah isn't short for Delilah as far as I know

It's Arabic rather than Hebrew and means 'night'

Although I have also heard of it meaning 'she who walks in darkness'

silveryscales · 17/07/2014 14:54

Of course Lilah is a well known name in its own right, and with different origins to Delilah.
But it also happens to be a handy short form of Delilah.

Ludways · 17/07/2014 14:59

I know one who is 5, I was unsure at first but now I love it. A lovely little girl too.

Rhubarbgarden · 17/07/2014 18:26

I know a five year old Delilah too. I'm not keen; it's a bit of a loaded name to pull off. I'd worry that if the child was a shrinking violet it could be a bit of a burden.

Gingerjv · 17/07/2014 19:49

Delilah - very very very beautiful name and has no connection to strippers;-)) it's too sophisticated and nobel name for simple stripper;-)

Happy36 · 17/07/2014 19:50

I think Delilah is a lovely name.

MsCoconut · 18/07/2014 09:08

It reminds me of one of my favourite first name - middle name combos 'Lily Adela' and I quite like the possible nicknames Della or Lilah too.
