Hello, we are expecting a bay girl in September and currently both in agreement about three names - Emma, Poppy and Sophie. Our DS is Jasper and we are aware that the girls names are more popular than Jasper and therefore can't help feeling they don't sit right together as a result.

It's important to us that they sound as if they belong together so would like some opinions. What do you think about each? Are they the same type of name? Or am I worrying about nothing! Thanks.

I really like Poppy and Jasper. I'm not keen on Emma and Jasper. I think it's because they sound similar in my accent

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 13:56

I would also prefer Poppy and Jasper. No love for Emma or Sophie.

HaroldLloyd · 15/07/2014 13:57

I like Sophie.

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2014 14:12

I love Emma and like Sophie. I think they are both classic, timeless names and fit well with Jasper. Poppy is sweet, but I always think it is a bit nicknamey and cute to be a proper name for an adult.

busyDays · 15/07/2014 14:47

I think all three go together with Jasper. They all have two syllables and don't rhyme or sound too similar to it. Although Jasper is less common than the girls names it is still a very well known, easily recognisable name, so I wouldn't worry.

Pangaea · 15/07/2014 14:54

I think Jasper is marvellous and all three girls names are really dull by comparison.

Montsti · 15/07/2014 15:01

I think jasper and poppy go best. I find emma boring and Sophie a bit wet and I know lots of them!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 15/07/2014 15:02

I love Sophie!

Though I think Poppy sounds best with Jasper.

All 3 if them go though.

DitzyDonkey · 15/07/2014 15:05

Poppy and Jasper are lovely together! Though it is a pity it is so popular....how about Polly?

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/07/2014 16:36

I could see myself with a child called Sophie or Emma, so therefore by default, Poppy must be the name you want out of the 3 as I couldn't see myself with a Poppy or a Jasper as they are not to my taste.

I know that may not sound very nice, but it's honestly not meant like that, I am sure you wouldn't like my childrens names as they aren't in the same style as the names you have selected. I just mean that by a process of elimination, I think that Jasper and Poppy as definitely on the same wavelength.

Legionofboom · 15/07/2014 18:40

Poppy is the best 'fit' from your list for Jasper I think.

Emma and Sophie sound much more classic to me.

weatherall · 15/07/2014 19:13

Poppy probably goes best with jasper.

BellaVida · 15/07/2014 19:18

I think Poppy goes well or Sophia as opposed to Sophie.

Thanks for your help. Now very confused as I had thought Sophie and Emma were more the in style of Jasper - classic and traditional - or maybe I just don't know much about names! Also, Poppy is our third choice so doubly confused. Any more thoughts much appreciated.

Nope, boys names in the style of Sophie and Emma would be Thomas, George, David, Harry etc.

Jasper is a bit more foppish and wet (sorry :( but don't know how else to describe what I mean) - more in the style of Guy, Felix, Piers etc so Poppy fits in well.

I'd also match it with girls names such as Cressida, Camilla, Felicity etc.

florascotia · 17/07/2014 19:03

Sophie is no 9; Sophia is no 15; Emma is no 50; Poppy is no 13.

In comparison, Jasper is not in top 100 (yet).

I love Sophie!!!!! Sophie and Jasper sound great together. Emma is too simple and Poppy is really awful name to my mind;-(((

Legionofboom · 18/07/2014 07:33

I would agree with myother's naming style groups.

But I do think you are in danger of massively overthinking it. What matters, surely, is that your children have names that you like, that go with your surname, are not easily confused or too similiar in sound.

If the popularity bothers you then you do need to start again with a new list but I would focus on finding a name you both like rather than trying to match it to other people's ideas of name style groups.

Create your own naming style group.

devoncreamtea · 18/07/2014 12:07

Why does it matter if one is more popular than the other? pick the one you love best and that suits her when you see her face. Jaspar is not exactly a totally crazy name - it is just not used as often. Calling one child I dunno 'Hunter' and his sibling 'Pam' might be a bit clashing, but in your case I see no issues!

The other factor of course is gender, in my experience boys are way harder to name, whereas there are many lovely girls names for all tastes. My girls have quite similar names to the ones you have chosen (in fact I have an Emma!) but my boy has a much more unusual name - Rafe. It works though and I feel the sense of the names are very similar and work together well.

Fwiw, I love Emma and Sophie from your list. Although I like Poppy it does feel less 'substantial' than the other 2. All names I think work well with Jaspar.

Good luck!
