Will Reuben be the new Noah?

Michonne · 10/07/2014 21:37

I always loved the name Noah but it became far too popular for me. I have since fallen for the name Reuben, but now I keep seeing it everwhere! Is it really growing in popularity? Is it likely to go the same way as Noah?

Can anyone suggest anything else I might like?

Thanks.

I know 3 Reubens round here. 1 of them is my own 10yo, the other two are toddlers.

I love Noah too, and only know 1, so I don't think of it as really popular.

Caleb is a good name. (Biased, as I have a Caleb too!)

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/07/2014 23:06

I know of 2 Reubens aged 7 years and 7 weeks!.

I do think it's getting more popular as I hadn't really heard of it a few years ago.

Noah is a lovely name, I only know of one aged 5.

Other suggestions:
Jacob
Elijah
Gabriel
Isaac
Zachary
Malachi
Daniel
Theo
Aidan
Joel
Ezra
Xander
Marcus
Jasper
Xavier
Dominic
Jared

I have a 2 1/2 yo Noah and am gutted about how popular it's become, although in RL I havnt actually come across any others and still really love it as a name.

Am about to pop with DD and if she was a boy would have been either Rueben or Josh/Joshua. Can't imagine it will get super popular but then again I never saw it happening with Noah either

Suzietwo · 11/07/2014 05:19

4.5 year old Reuben here. Tis a family name. Def more popular recently but people tend to be put off fearing it is overly Hebrew

rachel234 · 11/07/2014 07:11

Noah is much more common than Reuben around here (so far?).
Reuben is lovely, but how about these as alternatives
Rowan
Quentin
Tristan
Sebastian

Thank you all. A lot of those suggestions are on my list already, but I don't love any of them as much as Reuben.

Noah definitely seems to be more popular around here at the moment. There are several at dd's school, but I don't know of a Reuben. I just wonder whether it will grow in popularity as Noah did. I'd like to avoid that if possible as the same happened with dd - we thought it was a more unusual name but I now hear it all the time. That said she is the only one in her year...

I named ny DD a nice unusual name and by quirk it was really popular in her year and so she has always been one of two with her name. It doesn't matter really - the spread of names is much wider now, I haven't seen more than 2dc in a class with the same name lately, so easy enough to have different nicknames.

I know a few Reubens but they are all different ages, I don't think it's too popular.

RainbowB7 · 11/07/2014 22:10

I love both and have definitely heard more mention of Reuben recently so think it has had a boost in popularity.

In a similar vein I love Nathaniel/Nate and really hope that doesn't take off in popularity too much!

Michonne · 12/07/2014 20:35

Nathaniel/Nate was on my list too. Gorgeous name, but I know two.

I suppose popularity varies depending on location. And having given it a bit more thought I don't think it matters to me enough not to use Reuben. DH and I both love it and it feels right.

I had 4 Joshua's in one class and there were 7 in a 60 intake! That said it's pot luck anyway really. Could happen with any name.

ataposaurus · 14/07/2014 08:09

I have heard Reuben quite a lot recently - there are 3 in one playgroup we go to and I also know 1 five year old. That said it may be a fluke - none in my dc's small school or nursery I don't think.

I think it will get more popular though, along with all these old testament names for boys.

ShovettyMcShovetty · 14/07/2014 11:27

I've heard Reuben a lot lately and also Isaac. Annoying as I love them both.

I know a fab little Reuben whose brother is an equally fab little Noah! They ar the only two I know though.

Gingerjv · 14/07/2014 17:11

I do not think this name will be as popular as Noah;-) My top names list is like this: Elijah/Ellie/Eliah, Oscar, Tristan, Isaac, Killian. Also like Caleb, Connor

crazylady321 · 14/07/2014 22:25

Ive noticed its getting quite popular, ive been looking through online birth announcements trying to get a bit of inspiration.

What about Roman?

Michonne · 15/07/2014 12:26

Yes I like Roman. Not as much though.

I know of a few Reubens. The most popular names I hear (friends dc/nursey etc) are Noah, Reuben & Thomas/Tommy. Actually I can't think of any boys I know that have been born in the last 2 years that haven't been named one of those. Clearly my friends have little imagination Smile
