Madeleine or Clementine?

Hello!

We're trying to agree on a name for DD who is still nameless (though we've been nicknaming her Mimi for the time being which I guess works for either name!)
I'm English, DH French and we live in England. So the name had to be pronounceable in French, but not sound 'weird' in England which we think applies to both. I know Madeleine is considered old fashioned in France but is known well in both countries so won't cause any arguments! I've never met an English Clementine. Does it sound a bit odd (and maybe a bit pretentious?! We're really not like that!) we pronounce it Clemen-teen rather than -Tyne. Have already had a few 'satsuma/orange' comments from family.
We don't mind the nicknames Maddy/clemmie when she's older but would probably stick to her full name or Mimi as a family.
Other names we considered were Violette, Amélie, Clara, Florence/Flora, Rosa, Matilda.
Her middle names will be either Elsa/Elsie Jane after family members.
So.. Madeleine Elsa/Elsie Jane or Clementine Elsa/Elsie Jane ?

Thanks for any help! :-)

Clementine wins hands down for me. It was my choice for a girl - but I had two boys.

I don't love either... Clementine will always be orangey, and not keen on Clem. Madeleine is very pretty, but the McCann thing put me off putting it on my short list.

You had Amelie on yours which I think is adorable AND works with Mimi as a NN, why not go with that? Smile

NadiaWadia · 11/07/2014 10:58

They are both pretty, but I prefer Madeleine.

WooItsAGhostCat · 11/07/2014 11:05

Of the two I prefer Clementine. Hate Clem or Clemmy though.

Violette is nice. The other French name I love is Renée

I think we might have to go with Madeleine Elsa Jane, my family are really quite against Clementine.
Madeleine seems a reliable name, popular etc.
Clementine is newer and a more unusual choice, but I fear even I (less so DH) would feel weird calling her it at first....

Clementine - can't help but sing "Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my daaaaaaarling Clementine" in my head, and I'm not sure if this song is particularly flattering.

I much prefer Madeleine. I really don't like all the fruit/flower/season names and think they are a bit faddy.

Molotov · 11/07/2014 18:53

Mh, I think you have made the right decision Smile Congratulations Thanks

Misspilly88 · 11/07/2014 18:54

Clementine definitely! It's so cute.

silveryscales · 11/07/2014 18:59

lljkk · 11/07/2014 19:05

Clammy clam, not really keen.

minipie · 11/07/2014 19:06

Lovely name mh I much prefer Madeleine and love your middle names.

Dontgotosleep · 12/07/2014 00:32

Madeleine.

PisforPeter · 12/07/2014 00:36

Clementine is beautiful

Etah · 12/07/2014 00:41

Amélie Jane

Alexandra30 · 13/07/2014 17:01

I prefer Madeleine; it's my mum's name. By the way, she hates being called Maddy. She doesn't get shortened, but I have a friend with a little Madeleine - they call her Madge! When you get used to it, it's really cute!
