I am 16 weeks and DH and I have already had numerous arguments about names, especially boys names. We used up a brilliant cross cultural, old testament name on DS. We had no arguments about it and we are really happy with it. It turns out that was the only boys' name we both like!

So boys short list, in order of (my) preference is:

  1. Noah
  2. Moses
  3. Zachary
  4. Daniel

I'm worried that Noah and Daniel are too common, Moses is too weird, and Zachary clashes with our surname which contains ck and y sounds.

Girls:

  1. Miriam (prefer this spelling to variants)
  2. Sarah

Is Sarah too boring? Is it only suitable for a white woman (this is Dh's concern, baby will be mixed race)? Has anyone got any ideas about other OT girls' names? (Hannah and Rebekah clash horribly with surnames, much to our sadness. She would sound like she was a disease).

Thanks!

Adore both Miriam and Sarah. Prefer Miriam but think they are both classic and elegant.

Love Zachery and Daniel.

Nothing wrong with Moses but too biblical for me.

Noah I dislike, faddy, everywhere and I think it will date, I also dislike the sound of it.

I love Noah, Zachary and Miriam.

Naomi, Esther, Abigail or Lydia?

Keziah and Joseph?

RebeccaReads · 05/07/2014 22:07

Miriam and Sarah are both really nice, although culturally Sarah does feel a little "white" to me. But I'm not an expert!

Of your boys' names I like Daniel best (especially as you say that Zachary doesn't work well with your surname; otherwise I like it too). Have you considered Adam?

molly84 · 05/07/2014 22:10

Sorry, should have said love Daniel and Sarah. Abraham as another option?

OutragedFromLeeds · 05/07/2014 22:11

Love Noah and Daniel. Quite like Zach. Not keen on Moses.

I really don't like Miriam. In my mind Miriam is the slightly batty, rotund, 50 year old who works in your office.

Sarah is boring, but will work fine on a baby of any colour.

I know several white Sarahs and a mixed race one. I never think of it as suited to one type of culture and not another, I just think it's a lovely, classic name.

I'm most fond of Noah out of your boys list although the others are all nice too.

The names you've listed are quite popular with my Jewish friends. Is that relevant to you or is it just coincidence? Working on those lines I'm wondering if Joseph would appeal to you?

Also, Catherine, Hester, Benjamin, Rachel?

Sara is less dull than Sarah, IMO

Miriam is not nice

I knew a Soraya once (white, not that it matters!)

PunkAssMoFo · 05/07/2014 22:34

Prefer Sarah, & know of several from different cultures/ races.
I find Miriam a little stuffy.

Naomi or Leah are OT.

All of the boys names are lovely, but Daniel is a little dull. Depends on ds1's name as to what works.

Solomon or Elias may also work.
