Hi. My baby boy is due in 6 weeks and we still haven't firmly decided on his name.

Middle name will be James, unless we go with William or Hamish for first name, in which case middle name will be Michael.

Surname starts with McC

This is our shortlist:

Elliot
Nathaniel
Hamish
Christopher
Harry
Thomas
Alexander
William
Jack

How would you rank these? Thank you Smile

They're all very widely used already, apart from Elliot and Hamish, which are both lovely and interesting!

Montsti · 12/06/2014 13:20

From best to worst IMO!

William
Alexander
Thomas
Jack
Harry
Nathaniel
Elliot
Christopher
Hamish

I love William and think the others are all ok.

calculatorsatdawn · 12/06/2014 13:21

based on what goes best with a McC (I have imagined McCavendish - lord knows why)

Christopher
Jack
Thomas
William
Alexander
Hamish
Elliot
Nathaniel
Harry - for some reason Harry McCavendish sounds like a divorced alcoholic detective who doesn't play by the book but gets results.

' Damn you Harry McCavendish there is no I in team'

' throw the book at me then gov but I will nail the killer before nightfall'

stinkingbishop · 12/06/2014 13:23

Nice list!

Hamish
Jack
Nathaniel (esp. Nat)
Alexander
William/Harry (gorgeous names but suffer a bit from oo-after-the-princes?)
Elliott
Christopher

But I really like them all Smile.

Eminybob · 12/06/2014 13:23

Thanks Rachel. I love Elliot but DP isn't too keen. We both like Hamish but it is Scottish for James, which is dp's name, so I don't know if that's a bit much?
Btw, although DP has a Scottish surname, we're not actually Scottish or live in Scotland, if that makes any difference?

William is currently our front runner monstsi, and it's a family name so we'll be loved for it!

Calcs, it's not McCavenish, I wish, it's is much more obscure and silly!

Thanks stinking, it has taken us bloody ages to get it down to this I just can't decide!

I AM Scottish and had no idea about the James/Hamish connection, so really don't think that's a problem.

However if your surname is very Scottish, that might be a bit Ballamory overkill. You don't really want a Hamish McTavish! But eg a Hamish Ross or Hamish Cameron are fine and dandy.

MrsJohnDeere · 12/06/2014 13:36

William (best)
Christopher
Thomas
Alexander
Hamish

Don't like the others

HenI5 · 12/06/2014 13:38

Christopher
Thomas
Alexander
William
Harry
Jack
Hamish
Elliot
Nathaniel

That's my list, just a random internet stranger's choice Grin Thanks

Hassled · 12/06/2014 13:40

I love Hamish - great name. The only ones on your list I'm a bit iffy about are Elliot and Nathaniel. There are still a lot of Jacks and Harrys about, but that's not necessarily a problem.

My favourite is Hamish and then Alexander as love the nns Sandy and Sacha.

quellerosiel · 12/06/2014 16:53

I totally adore Hamish! I met a delightful little Hanish once and think it should make a come back Smile Jack is soooo over done at the moment. William is lovely too and lots of nn options. Have fun choosing!

squoosh · 12/06/2014 17:02

Hamish
Elliot
Nathaniel (Nate)
Christopher (Kit)

Don't really like any beneath this line so haven't ranked them

Harry
Thomas
Alexander
William
Jack

Provencalroseparadox · 12/06/2014 17:26

Oooh love the nn Kit.

ashesandfire · 12/06/2014 17:31

My order of preference is
Alexander
Nathaniel
Elliot
Christopher - because I like Kit as a nn
Hamish
William
Thomas
Harry
Jack
As a teacher I (very judgementally Blush) see Harry and Jack as naughty boys' names!!

ashesandfire · 12/06/2014 17:32

Actually I really like all of them tbh, apart from Harry and Jack, and not fussed about Thomas. Lovely list!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 12/06/2014 17:37

OK, in my personal order of preference;

Jack
Thomas (Tom)
Alexander (Alex or Zander)
Harry
Nathaniel (Nat)

I wouldn't use;

Elliot (just not for me, sounds a bit 'wet')
Christopher (can't stand the full name, but really like Kit!)
William (meh)
Hamish (a scottie dog - probably would like the name if I was Scottish though!)

Eminybob · 12/06/2014 17:47

Thanks all. I'll show to DP when he gets home.

Tbh, he doesn't really like Elliot, so that'll come off the list. Neither of us are very fussed about Jack, so that'll come off.

I also love the nn Kit for Christopher. And Nathaniel would be Nate.

I love Alexander, but we have a friend (not a very close one, but is friends with a lot of our friends) who has just called his baby boy Alexander.

Christopher (best by a country mile)

These 3 are good
William
Jack (like a lot but prefer Jake)
Hamish

These 3 are quite nice.
Harry
Elliot
Thomas

Really dislike Nathaniel and Alexander (love sandy for short though)

That was a good game.

HilariousInHindsight · 12/06/2014 19:09

Thomas and Alexander are my favourites.

We have a McC name too so will keep an eye on this for when we ttc#2

ch1134 · 13/06/2014 11:10

Thomas
Christopher
Alexander
Nathaniel
William
Hamish
Harry
Jack
Elliot
