So I have about 9weeks to go till he arrives, and was just wondering what you all thought of the name Arthur?

Is it too oldschool? We're not really "in" to any modern names and definatley don't want something that can be referenced back to twilight or the such.

We wanted a normal but not popular name. Do you think Arthur fits the brief?

The other option we have is Luther if we think he dosnt look like a Arthur.

Arthur is nice. Much better than Luther imo

TheDudess · 09/06/2014 11:43

Arthur is lovely. Not fussed on Luther at all sorry.

squoosh · 09/06/2014 11:52

Arthur is very popular at the moment so won't seem too old school at all.

Northumberlandlass · 09/06/2014 11:53

Arthur is great.
Luther - not fussed on. Although has made me start day dreaming about Idris Elba Smile

LiberalLibertine · 09/06/2014 11:54

Arthur is lovely,I don't like Luther either.

BikeRunSki · 09/06/2014 11:54

Arthur is extremely popular. I know about 3 or 4 under 3.

Luther is dreadful. Why would you cal your child after the Devil?!

Boudica1990 · 09/06/2014 11:57

Yeah I'm not overly keen on Luther but DP is so I've agreed it as the back up. I was allowed a unusual family name as the middle name, so it's been a bit of give and take for the first name. I've let DP have free reign on the first name, however we both do love Arthur and that's what we call bump when talking to him so now I'm really hoping Arthur suits him.

This will be our only child so both very exited :)

Bike you don't know his father, he may well end up being the devil child ;)

Fair enough. Think I might be a bit wrong in that reference anyway.

Boudica1990 · 09/06/2014 12:09

Yes I think your thinking Lucifer, not Luther. I have the tv programme Luther to thank for the introduction of Luther to the name game.

Really like Arthur, not keen on Luther. Its too close to Lucifer for my liking! (Wouldn't let DH put Lucius on our list for same reason).

Montsti · 09/06/2014 13:37

Arthur is nice, Luther horrible. Sorry!

Guin1 · 09/06/2014 13:48

Arthur is great. It is quite popular at the moment and getting more so, around 50 on the 2012 boys' name list I think. Hopefully this isn't 'too popular' for you. It does mean that you won't have to worry about it being seen as 'too old school'. And it is MUCH better than Luther.

DiamondsAndRust · 09/06/2014 13:49

Arthur is nice, and very mainstream now, so wouldn't be seen as 'too old'. It's a great name, but I think it's getting very popular in certain locations - definitely hearing it a lot around here in North London.

Really not keen on Luther - sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 09/06/2014 13:54

Arthur is lovely. I only know two Arthurs, one is 5, the other is 90 and it suits both of them.

Luther - don't like it all, sorry.

Boudica1990 · 09/06/2014 14:01

Thanks all :) Arthur is not popular in my area at all. More George, William, Benjamin, Gareth, Geraint all them so i'm happy with that.

Im gonna to try and persuade DP against Luther as like I said I'm not overly keen, or just say he definatley looks like a Arthur haha.

Def Arthur

soontobeslendergirl · 09/06/2014 16:58

Arthur is fine - Luther isn't :)

Maybe suggest Albert (Bertie) or Edgar as a back up?

Boudica1990 · 09/06/2014 17:01

I have a uncle Edgar I couldn't really impose two of my family names :( I do like Albert though!

All I have to hope is he dosnt come back from 6weeks away with the Army having had numerous suggestions from the boys on what babies name should be....god knows what I'll be trying to turn down tactfully and with diplomacy haha

soontobeslendergirl · 09/06/2014 17:06

Ha ha, I can imagine :)

funnyoldonion · 09/06/2014 17:28

Don't get too hung up on whether the baby suits Arthur when you see him. My DD1 didn't suit her name when she was born but I didn't care and used it anyway and now she couldn't be any other name, DD2 didn't suit her name so I used the second choice then changed it back to my first choice a few months in, oops! She now looks nothing like she did at birth and I'm happy today perfectly suits the name she has! People Grow into their names, so just go with Arthur if you love it! I really don't like Luther, if you want a normal name don't use Luther! X

Only1scoop · 09/06/2014 17:29

Arthur great name

Luther not so

burgatroyd · 09/06/2014 17:32

Luther Vandross is another famous Luther! More unusual than Arthur. Has more strength too.

somedizzywhore1804 · 09/06/2014 17:38

Sorry but I don't like Arthur. It makes me think instantly of two things: Arthur Fowler and the white cat who used to advertise the cat food and eat out of the tin with his paw.

Boudica1990 · 09/06/2014 19:48

Arthur who?? And I have no idea about the cat reference but each to their own :)

The only Arthur I ever think of is King Arthur.
