Cassandra or Alexandra? Other strong girls' names?

Finding out (hopefully!) at my scan on Wednesday if DC2 is a boy or a girl.

We have (for fun) made a tentative list for each sex.

For girls two of the names are Alexandra or Cassandra. They are derived from the same name I think, but which is nicer?

Alexandra would be shortened to Alex. Cassandra possibly to Sandy as I don't know how I feel about Cassie! I like having a long/formal version of a name (as we have with DS) so they can choose what they prefer to be known as when adults.

I really want a "strong"/elegant girls' name, not a flowery/pretty one. Any other suggestions?

Might all be moot of course if we see a willy on screen in a few days Grin

Love Alexandra, it's too of our list for girls.

I prefer Cassie to Sandy, Cassie sounds quite feisty.

I like male nicknames on girls ie Matty for Matilda.

Tess is also a strong name.

Montsti · 02/06/2014 10:35

I prefer Alexandra to Cassandra. Victoria? Charlotte?

Zara8 · 02/06/2014 10:36

I love Elizabeth strawberryjam but DH says no!

Hadn't thought of Josephine! Hmmm! I know people who have it shortened to Jo but possibly Josie when little?

Hadn't thought of Tess either singaporeswing

I find girls' names so much harder to come up with than boys' names!

DH's favourite name (for years) has been Sophie but it's so very popular at the moment! Still a beautiful name though!

I like Victoria Montsti but DH says no to that too!!

Charlotte doesn't do it for me!

I love Alexandra! Very strong and regal. I like Alex too as a NN.

I think Cassandra is another word for a clairvoyant so I guess they have slightly different meanings..? I am no expert though! Smile

DP also hates flowery names and suggested Francesca the other week and it is really growing on me.

I knew siblings growing up called Emma, Tess and Sophie. All very confident, gorgeous, clever, funny, feisty girls. Think they are very non-flowery names.

I think Cassandra is quite a tragic name, Greek mythology - she was the psychic who no-one believed, it didn't end well.

Cassia?

Miranda is quite similar to your initial two and I like Tamsin as a non-girly name.

I prefer Alexandra to Cassandra, and it was the chosen name had DS1 been a girl. When expecting DC2 I had gone off Alexandra a bit, and we were favouring Caroline, but it turned out to be a DS so not required. Expecting DC3 now and stuck on girls' names. It will probably be a boy I expect!

Possibilities for us (when DH finally engages in the subject Wink):
Alexandra
Caroline
Miranda
Meredith
Selina
Lydia

I think Cassandra is more flowery sounding than Alexandra. Not a huge fan of either, but I do love other suggestions

Cassandra just reminds me of the tragic myth.

I think Cassie is the normal nn.

More great suggestions, I really like Claudia and Georgia!

I had my scan today and baby is indeed a girl! GrinGrinGrin So this thread is the potential baby name list!
