Thoughts on Lavinia...love it or hate it??

At the moment it's our number one but I wanted to gauge your thoughts as I've never met or really heard of anyone with that name (besides the girl in Downton a few years back!). Its classic and unique which is what we're aiming for. Any thoughts or ideas very welcome! x

I know a lovely teen called Lavinia, suits her really well and she is an elegant, cool young lady, carries it off well.

milkwagon · 16/05/2014 20:05

Makes me think of vaginas and labias I'm afraid....

Angelto5 · 16/05/2014 20:09

I like it-not very common. How abt
Davina?

ToffeeMoon · 16/05/2014 20:12

Sorry, I think Lav-atory.

Zone2mum · 17/05/2014 13:18

Lavvy connotations and gruesome fate of Lavinia in Titus Andromicus = no from me

bouncingbelle · 17/05/2014 18:59

Nothing wrong with the name per se but there's a strong chance someone will shorten it to lav, which would put me right off.

JonathanGirl · 17/05/2014 19:02

The horrible character in A Little Princess is the first thing that springs to mind.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 17/05/2014 20:41

I like it a lot, but seems it might be a bit marmite, so - how about Melissa? Similar feel, lovely name. Or Vanessa?

CrispyFern · 17/05/2014 20:47

Isn't the awful mother on the Sopranos Lavinia?

Viviennemary · 17/05/2014 20:52

I don't hate it but it is a bit over the top. And the potential nicknames would absolutely put me off. So on the whole no.

Pitapotamus · 17/05/2014 21:25

Love it!

dreamingofwineandcheese · 17/05/2014 21:58

I know a Davinia who is one of the nicest people I have ever met, would that be worth considering?

nooka · 17/05/2014 22:04

My godmother was called Lavinia, always known as Vin. She was a wonderful woman so it has good associations for me.

seasaltbaby · 18/05/2014 08:34

Love it- I know one Lavinia ( in her 30's) & she's one of a kind, everyone calls her Vinny. Go for it if you love it,

amyshellfish · 18/05/2014 12:27

There's some really immature people here. "Reminds me of labia/toilets" ... seriously?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 18/05/2014 19:24

How would you pronounce it?

WhosLookingAfterCourtney · 18/05/2014 19:26

Horrible child from A Little Princess

squoosh · 18/05/2014 19:30

'There's some really immature people here. "Reminds me of labia/toilets" ... seriously?'

Yes, seriously. Lavinia reminds me of 'lavatory'. I don't see what's immature about that. Confused

Nunyabiz · 18/05/2014 19:32

Seems we're all 'immature' squoosh. Ignore. She hasn't even given an opinion on the name just left a judgey comment.

maggiethemagpie · 18/05/2014 21:08

Don't like it. And that goes for Davinia too.

Catflap1 · 18/05/2014 21:53

Only heard/know of one lavina! My older sister had a good friend in secondary school called this, she would be 44 now

Gullygirl · 19/05/2014 15:00

Lavinia makes me think of toilets, sorry.

However I do know a Livinia, shortened to Livvy and like both.

ToffeeMoon · 19/05/2014 15:42

It's not immature to think it Squoosh. Saying it out loud might be or teasing someone for it.

See, when you say Lucy - I hear loo seat.

I would NEVER say that to anyone.

squoosh · 19/05/2014 15:49
Confused

Ummm, yes but no one has actually said it out loud have they? The OP asked for people's thoughts on a name which she is yet to give to her child. What's the problem?

squoosh · 19/05/2014 16:01

Sorry, that might have sounded snappier than I intended!
