I like it.... Game of thrones or not! And it isn't a made up name like Joffrey!

Do it!!!!

Arya is a commonly used name in India, been around for decades. Predominantly a boys name but being used for girls as well recently.
Aryan is derived from Arya.

Arya is a Sanskrit word meaning 'noble'.

I wouldn't worry about GoT - it's not going to run forever!

It will sound really dated really soon and it's just cheesy naming from GOT!

Anya is nice.

In the book she will probably get raped and horribly mutilated at some point. That would give me qualms.

iamdivergent · 08/05/2014 14:00

Confused although we are not Indian, my name and my younger daughters names originate from India. ..so that could be a theme for us. Smile

Before GoT got popular and I read / watched it and saw what a cool character Arya in GoT is, I heard someone suggest this as a name and I'm afraid my first reaction was "Are you a secret Nazi?" Now I know that they were just an early GoT devotee. Grin

I think the GoT reference will replace that easily though.

Although I would wait until the end of the series even if that is a few years away, because the survival rate for GoT isn't great, and for all you know Arya might come to a horrible end and be remembered for that.

[OT: this reminds me of a joke I saw on twitter - "Why doesn't George R R Martin use Twitter? Because he killed all 140 characters."]

If you like it, go for it. GoT won't be top of cultural consciousness forever.

No one ever says to an Emma "Jane Austen fan?" these days.

Wendy was made up by one of J M Barrie's young friends, it ceases to matter after a while!

squoosh · 09/05/2014 16:00

Peter Pan and Emma have the advantage of being 100 and 200 years old respectively.

Great joke posy Grin

I love it, and GOT will have no meaning to kids who are born now, plenty of people are named after characters in books/films etc

I've heard of people naming their daughters Ophelia, which is a far more tragic story than I imagine Arya's fate might be!

iamdivergent · 10/05/2014 12:09

Hope so sooperdooper he has to leave someone alive why not sweet little arya Grin

mindalina · 10/05/2014 12:17

there is a sample chapter on his website atm from the next book. might be worth a read before you name your darling baby after 'sweet little" arya! Wink

iamdivergent · 10/05/2014 12:26

Grin I've read it lol but I still like her anyway

picnicbasketcase · 10/05/2014 12:31

Isn't that spelling pronounced Ar-ya rather than Ar-ree-a though? Like 'are ya going out later?'

badtime · 11/05/2014 00:28

Pebbles, Joffrey isn't made-up either - it's an old variant of Geoffrey/Jeffrey.

squoosh · 11/05/2014 00:34

What would you think of someone who called their son Joffrey?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 11/05/2014 07:56

I would say it as Ah-ya, as would most people because of GoT. You should use Aria if you intend it to be said as ah-re-ah.

PosyFossilsShoes · 11/05/2014 11:09

Yes sooperdooper Ophelia's not great, also Phaedra is popular at the moment - hopefully not in celebration of the Phaedra who made a false rape allegation against Hippolytus (her husband's son), and she committed suicide out of guilt. Shock

karigan · 12/05/2014 07:30

I love it. :)
