I know I'm probably pushing my luck but I need help naming my recently born litter of labrador puppies and I've lurked on this board for long enough to know that there are often brilliant suggestions here.

There are eight puppies, five boys and three girls and they all need naming. The names cannot be longer than 16 characters and are usually based on the same theme for each litter. These aren't usually the names they're known by - they are their official, registered names.

I have thought about using the virtue names but am open to suggestions Grin

My nan has pedigree dogs and she was explaining this to me once- don't they have two names? Is the second dictated by one of the parents?

Have you got any themes you like?

We have a beautiful golden retriever who we named Montgomery (never Monty). His brothers were named Paddington and Bentley (we don't own nor did we name the latter two).

daisydotandgertie · 05/05/2014 16:04

Alita - yes, they will have two names.

The first name is my kennel name, and is the reason there are only 16 letters left to play with.

I like types of duck. That'd be quite fitting.

Weather?- Storm, Sunny, Snowy, Ice, Breeze...

Times of day?- Dawn, Twilight, Sundown, Dusk, Noon...

Sea based?- Marine, Wave, Ripple, Whirlpool...

Vegetables?- Sprout, Turnip, Beetroot, Corn...

Stones?- Amethyst, Garnet, Quartz, Sapphire, Ruby, Opal...

daisydotandgertie · 05/05/2014 16:44

Vegetables! Brilliant.

I had thought of lighthouses too - needles, south stack, portland etc but they kind of lose their point without lighthouse attached 'needles' just looks odd, IMV.

How about Snow White and the seven dwarfs so one of them will be Snow White as there's eight!

Or birds wren, robin, lark, Paloma etc

Wishfulmakeupping · 05/05/2014 17:10

Chocolate bars... Twirl, Mars, Rolo, Drifter, time out (for the naughty one!), flake, picnic, dime

Pebbles0934 · 05/05/2014 17:49

Constellations? Cassiopeia, Lyra, etc

Somersaults · 05/05/2014 17:57

I love the idea of musical terms or chocolate!

ComeHeather · 05/05/2014 18:17

herbs and spices?
cinnamon
cardamon
pepper
basil
paprika etc

friendface · 05/05/2014 18:18

Musical terms is great! Also leaves a lot of room to apply their personalities to their names.

Constellations is also a fab suggestion

CitronVert · 05/05/2014 18:20

Greek myths? Hector, Apollo, Calypso, Athena etc?

SoftSheen · 05/05/2014 18:31

Virtue names would be quite good I think.
Boys: Endeavour, Victor, Concord, Fortitude, Noble.
Girls: Faith, Amity, Constance.

Or British rivers?
Boys: Ribble, Derwent, Ancholme, Orwell, Granta.
Girls: Linnet, Lark, Lune.

Very jealous that you have a litter of lab puppies, I'm sure they're gorgeous (no doubt very hard work though!) :)

Leeds2 · 05/05/2014 18:40

Biscuits, such as Hobnob and Gingernut.

Mountains.

Months of the year.

CrispyFern · 05/05/2014 19:01

Girls, how about Caubvick, Cirque and Torngarsoak.

Boys could be Innuit, Micmac, Beothuk, Innu and Metis.

The three highest peaks in Labrador, and the five aboriginal groups of the region.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 05/05/2014 19:34

Shipping forecast? Fastnet, Lundy, FitzRoy, Shannon, Rockall er um forget the rest...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 05/05/2014 19:35

Malin, Hebrides, Bailey...

daisydotandgertie · 05/05/2014 20:39

I've thought about shipping forecast names - and still like them, but some of them, a bit like lighthouses lose their specialness when not in a list - eg Portland, Wight, Dover.

I love the idea of musical terms and labrador region specific names but Blush would probably have to look up what some of the musical terms actually mean.

I have already put together a Greek god list - Hera, Hebe and Ida for the girls; Apollo and Zeus for one set of boy colours and Hector, Heracles and Helios for the other boys. I love the girls names in this list, but am not so keen on the boys.

Have also done constellations - boys Apollo, Orion, Jupiter, Heracles and Perseus; girls Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Artemis.
