Siblings with the same names as famous siblings?

The only boys name DH and I can agree on would mean that our sons would have the same names as brothers from a very popular book, which is being made into a film franchise to be released later this year.

The book was huge a couple of years ago (it is a"steamy" book with a certain dull colour in the title) and as I didn't bother reading it I didn't realise DS1 has the name of one of the characters.

If baby turns out to be a boy, our favourite name is the name of the main male character.

Do you think it matters?

I expect we would get a few comments and then nothing, but the women in my mum's office mentioned it as soon as my mum told them our favourite names (I don't mind her discussing this btw, I know her office friends well) and now my mum is worried that is all people will talk about!

I have no idea what names you're talking about, as I haven't read the book.

If one or both of the names are unusual, the yes, I expect the association would be made (like say Donny and Marie) but if more widely used then it may well not be noticed (like Ed and David).

Aciderwouldbenice · 28/04/2014 11:28

Sorry, I haven't included the names to see if they were obvious!

I know the names and to be honest I wouldn't have thought anything of hearing them together, they aren't unusual names and I know several people with those names. I don't think people would notice unless pointed out.

Normally if I don't have anything nice to say about a name I don't comment on this board , but I just have to . Those books are vile and you really don't want your dcs associated with them . I'm sorry but I really wouldn't .

kimlo · 28/04/2014 11:33

I haven't read the book, but I think I can work out your favourite name anyway.

I wouldn't that book was massive so I think most people would know. I know everybody I work with would, they talked about it a lot and it'll get worse with the film.

Iloveonionchutney · 28/04/2014 11:33

I do think they are both lovely names too.

Ps I also think the names are lovely it's just unfortunate this piece of drivel was written Angry

olaflikeswarmhugs · 28/04/2014 11:35

Broken exactly how I feel I only read the first one too !

mrsnec · 28/04/2014 11:37

I read the books and had to Google the name of the brother as I don't remember him being a significant character. I assume other people would be the same.

HandragsNGladbags · 28/04/2014 11:37

cannot see it being an issue, and if people do know it says more about them and their dodgy reading tastes than you Smile

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 28/04/2014 11:49

I don't even remember Christian having a brother!

Aciderwouldbenice · 28/04/2014 11:55

Thank you all, a mix of responses.

I had no idea DS1's name was in the book until a checkout girl told my Mum as she bought him some presents when he was a week old. Honestly- where does my mum find these people!?! She hasn't read the books, only a couple of people I know have read the first one.

Are we talking Christian and Elliot?
To be honest I don't think the name Elliot is that connected with the book and would never had associated it with 50 shades until you said it. I think you would have to be a super enthusiast to remember Elliot's name (I had to google).
Christian - yes I think of the book, but I think in a few years it will all be forgotten.
I think if you had B/G twins called Christian and Anna it may be a bit much, but they are both lovely names I wouldn't worry about it

DessieLou · 30/04/2014 21:20

I've not read it so it wouldn't occur to me. I would just think what lovely names they are!

Orangeisthenewbanana · 30/04/2014 21:32

I have read the drivel that is the books. I know the main character is Christian & that his brother's name starts with an E (I think!), but couldn't tell you what it is! I don't think you need to worry too much, his brother isn't even in the books that much from what I can remember.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 30/04/2014 21:33

Ah, X-post. Elliot, that's it!

hippoherostandinghere · 30/04/2014 22:20

I read the books when they came out but had completely forgotten the brothers name. I really don't think people would make the connection. They're both great names.

Having said that I did refrain from calling my DD Isabella because her big brother was Jacob. I'm not that much of a Twilight freakGrin

Theonlyoneiknow · 30/04/2014 22:36

I would never have associated those two names with the book. Even if you said Christian my first thought wouldn't be 50 shades. I have no recollection of the name Elliott from the books!
