Do you think we could use Sandy as a nickname for Sebastian?

I'm close to giving up on this poor baby's name, I just can't seem to settle on one I love. In fact I'm going crazy and I'm running out of time.

MIL hates everything except Roderick, they are super posh and have a lot of influence (financial and emotional blackmail) over my lovely but wet Dh.

Here are the few I've come up with... please help me fall in love eith a name so that I don't have to call my son Roderick...

Jonathan (Jonty)
Sebastian (Sandy)
Lysander (Sandy)
Jeremy (Jem)

Help!!!!

How about the nn Rory for Roderick?

Otherwise, I can suggest Vincent, Gregory and Richard as sensible alternatives. I love these names and want to share the love!

Good luck with MIL, sounds a ghastly situation.

OublietteBravo · 26/04/2014 16:55

I actually think you can call him whatever you like and use the nn Sandy. My BIL is always known as Stevie despite his given names being Mark Christopher.

From your list I'd probably go for Jonathan with Lysander as a middle name and go with the nn Sandy.

Although I'd be tempted to torture MIL a bit first. Can you convince her you've fallen in love a name you know she will hate (such as Wayne, Darren or similar).

Ds1 is Arthur, so good suggestion!

Not sure about Hugo. Huge House? Hmmmm.

What do you lovely people think of Rafe? Is it too sharp with a one syllable surname, also is it a bit 'chavvy'.

I'm just going round in circles.

I think Rafe is a bit choppy with House. I know a Raphael nn Rafe, though -- you could do Raphael House.

Vikingbiker · 27/04/2014 08:46

I adore jonty but dislike Jonathan

Vikingbiker · 27/04/2014 08:49

Rafe if fabulous. I only know one very heeled rafe.

Vikingbiker · 27/04/2014 08:50

Monty

Vikingbiker · 27/04/2014 09:00

Benedict with nick name neddy
Rufus
Clarence clarrie
Lawrence Laurie
Milo miles
Rafferty
George Georgie

StoneFoxMama · 27/04/2014 09:39

Did somebody just suggest Clarence? Clarence house, the mil should love that one with her love of the royals.
Ps hasn't anyone told her the photo of her with royalty in the front reception room is rather crass and not the done thing...maybe mention this if you need a distraction from a Roderick discussion.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/04/2014 16:28

You can't have Roderick - his initials would be R House.

Mrsfullhouse · 29/04/2014 08:46

Ha ha Clarence House, love it.
So, after a week of ... 'George' which is lovely but in the same realm as Jack...

What do you think of Rafferty nn Rafe? What does the name say to you?

Rafferty James House?

Does it go with Arthur? Will I ever find a name? Will Mil ever just fuck off??

Thanks in advance!

I like Rafferty. (although I think Buck would be good)

JacqueslePeacock · 29/04/2014 21:30

You would still have the R. House issue though.

Mrsfullhouse · 29/04/2014 21:58

Dh hates it anyway. I made the mistake of giving him an inch on george by saying maybe... he's digging his heels in now.

DebbieOfMaddox · 29/04/2014 22:44

So dig yours in harder...

OublietteBravo · 30/04/2014 07:52

Arthur and George is a book by Julian Barnes. Would that put him off?

ThoraNomiki · 30/04/2014 17:32

Could your DH add Roderick as another middle name for himself as tribute to his late brother. Then call your baby whatever you like. I like Lysander and Sebastian (Bastion, Seb or Ste for short)

saffronwblue · 01/05/2014 00:06

George is lovely but I think a two syllable name or more goes better with house. Sebastian to be known as Sandy.
Tell MiL it is going to be Wayne after an uncle you have never mentioned who lives on the Costa Brava having had some trouble with the police.

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 01/05/2014 04:43

I love Rafferty and I think it goes well with Arthur. Good luck with your MIL!

saffronwblue · 02/05/2014 22:12

Have you considered Simon, nn Sandy?

kinkytoes · 03/05/2014 08:04

Another vote for Monty. So cute!

elQuintoConyo · 03/05/2014 08:41

Omfg what an awful Mil. Next time she throws some histrionics ("Freddie? What an awful name!", "Why don't you sell up and live on the estate?") put on a shocked face and exclaim: "But... but... Mil... what a chaavy thing to say!/Only chavs live nextdoir to their patents!" or some such bollocks. See how she likes them.apples.

Ok, now to your names Smile
Imvho...
Sebastian - afraid I've never liked it, nor the nicknames.
Jonty - sounds invented!
Monty - dull
Jeremy nn Jem - absolutely lovely, he'll be a real 'jem' of a son to you [soppy emoticon]

I absolutely adore the previously suggested Hugo House - that's just great: strong yet soft, god numbber of syllables, nice alliteration HH, goes with Arthur, can be posh or not.

Congratulations on your baby OP Thanks and I send some ((hugs)) and strength Smile
