olive or carys?

We're looking for a girl's name which isn't too cute/popular/pretty/girly...! We have lots of Welsh relatives despite not living there ourselves so wouldn't mind something welsh. Also lived in new Zealand for quite a while and liked some of the Maori names.

So far our options seem to be:

Olive Grace
Carys (Joan?? Grandma's name)

Any opinions on them or new suggestions??

Thanks :)

Carys is lovely.
Olive is awful.

Carys Elizabeth?

FarelyKnuts · 22/04/2014 09:13

We have a Cerys. Carys seems a slightly harsher sound for some reason (to my ears anyway). And no to Olive.

friedgreentomatoes88 · 22/04/2014 22:26

Much prefer Carys to Cerys. I also like Olive though, not much help!

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/04/2014 22:43

Farely

I've always thought it the other way around, how funny, exact same thought just with the differing name.

I know far fewer Cerys' though Only the one. She goes by a nickname mostly. Carys was quite a popular name for my age group at school and the years above and below, so they'd all be between 26-24

FarelyKnuts · 22/04/2014 23:00

Alis What nickname does she go by? Wracking my brains to think of nickname my Cerys could end up with :o

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/04/2014 23:01

Ha! Fair point Farely, I think it must be something to do with how her older sister (at the time a tiny toddler) said Cerys - she goes by Kess.

I love Carys and don't like olive

toffeelolly · 22/04/2014 23:47

Love Carys, my daughters name. But do not like cerys . To me it just does not sound nice.

Salazar · 23/04/2014 00:23

I love Carys. DDs middle name is Charis as it was a more culturally appropriate spelling for us. Think it is prettier with this spelling too.

I do also like Olive though! I imagine an Olive to be very quirky.

DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2014 00:26

Carys is really lovely.

I think Olive is an ugly name, as is Joan.

ElkTheory · 23/04/2014 03:31

I don't care for the name Carys. It always makes me think of the word caries, even though they are pronounced differently. So of the two names, I would choose Olive.

DangoDays · 23/04/2014 03:55

Love Carys of Cerys. I know one and she is just gorgeous. Would be a top name for us if we ever had a dd.

Graciejoylove8 · 23/04/2014 13:30

Carys Jane? Carys June?

I struggle with Joan
But that's personal, and shouldn't influence your choice, so go with you gut instinct.
My dd is Gracie, so I'm bias for Carys Grace too

Carys Joan is really lovely. Olive always makes me think of Olive Oyl Popeye's girlfriend!
