Artemisia / Darius for a part Iranian baby?

Arty as a NN for a girl?

DH hates Artemisia, thinks it sounds chavvy. But I want an inspirational feminist name, taken from both Artemisia of Caria and the Italian painter.

Not chavvy at all, but 5 syllables is pretty cumbersome so you'll definitely need a short nickname and Arty is more of a boys nickname IMO.

BikeRunSki · 20/04/2014 23:19

I like Darius, I think it is known well enough in uk.

JackyDanny · 20/04/2014 23:20

NN izzy?
NN Mia?

TwosaCrowd · 20/04/2014 23:28

NN izzy is a good shout, will try DP with that!

Like artemisia but Arty as a nn sound really mc pretentious.bit wanky
I do like darius

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/04/2014 08:29

Artemis is more attractive by far.

Is Darius not a male name?

AuntieStella · 21/04/2014 08:35

I prefer Artemis (the Greek goddess) to Artemesia (plant name, bit frilly for me) for a girl.

Darius is fine for a boy.

Mepmep · 21/04/2014 09:33

Isn't Darius a boys' name in Poland and Romania?

I agree with pp, Artemis is great, although it does sound rather like a warship (HMS Artemis...)

What other Iranian names have you considered?

florascotia · 21/04/2014 10:09

Darius definitely a male name.
Darius the Great, king of Persia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_I

I may be wrong - others will know better - but in some countries I think 'Darius' is pronounced 'Dah-ree-oosh', if this matters.

I rather like Artemisia. Other Persian heroines = Esther, Shirin, Roxana. I expect you've seen this, but if not, more names here: www.persepolis.nu/

peppinagiro · 21/04/2014 10:29

Artemisia is a great name, and loads of possible nicknames (Arty, Mia, Mizzie, Izzy...). It definitely isn't chavvy, if anything I'd say it's firmly in the middle class box with the likes of Persephone or Araminta.

It's frillier than I would personally go for, but Artemisia Gentileschi is a good role model to be named after, and so I like it.

CrispyHedgeHog · 21/04/2014 11:04

Darius is deffo a male name, exdp had it and his mum was Iranian

TwosaCrowd · 21/04/2014 13:34

Sorry, I meant Artemisia for a girl, Darius for a boy, we're finding out the sex next week.

Darius is great name fir wee boy

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/04/2014 16:32

In that case, Darius is very nice

nooka · 21/04/2014 16:43

I really like Darius. I don't like Arty as a nn, seems an ugly sort of nn for a pretty name. To me the emphasis when I say Artemisia is more on the end, so Mizzie/Missy might be better maybe? However if your dh hates it then I think it's back to the drawing board in any case.

ConfusedPixie · 21/04/2014 16:54

I love Darius, I really liked Artemisia but the name has faded a bit for me now, not sure why. I have firm favourites for boys names but my mind changes on girl's names!

I agree that Arty sounds wanky tbh, but there are loads of options for NNs with Artemisia.

We're not having kids for a few years yet but DP knows that we'll be using Iranian names Blush I love Darius, Caspian and Cyrus. I'll be screwed wrt girls names, the only one I've ever loved is Arya, but it's become rather popular recently Hmm
