Astrid: I always liked Astrid, but then watched an episode of American office where the name was mistaken for Ass-Turd Sad - not sure if I can use it now.

Freda/Frida: I like Freda or Frida - my name and my mum's names have unusual 'i' spellings so hence the Frida, but I am worried people might pronounce it Fridda or mistake it for Friday. I like the idea of calling her "free" for short.

Iris: DH's favourite, but I think it might sound a bit fey? I like that it's a character from the Blind Assassin.

Josephine: Josephine was my nan's name, and I like Josie but don't like Jo (someone I don't get on with), hence considering as a middle name.

Love iris OP - beautiful name.
Also I think Astrid is gorgeous. I don't think the ass-turd should stop you from using the name.

UriGeller · 10/04/2014 16:11

Iris is gorgeous. So is Astrid. But Freda is awful, however its spelled.

Thought about Freya?

ToffeeJungle · 10/04/2014 17:13

Iris is best by far.

mathanxiety · 10/04/2014 19:18

Frida is one of my all time favourite names so I would choose that.

No matter what name you choose you are going to run into a small group of people who people who can't read or spell some time in your life. I know women whose names are Anne and Jane who have encountered people who called then Ann-eh and Jannay. And men named John and Patrick who have been called Joan and Patricia.

The problem is not the name. It's stupidity.

DessieLou · 10/04/2014 19:39

Aelfreida is my guilty pleasure name so freda/frida would be my choice. Iris and Josephine are lovely too but Astrid is not so good. It just doesn't sound pretty to me...maybe it's the 'Ass' sound. ??

i like astrid! knew one growing up, its a pretty name and no one ever got it wrong or teased her!

RhondaJean · 10/04/2014 19:45

One of my daughters middle name is astrid. It's a beautiful, strong, creative name and it means "beautiful as a goddess"

It also makes me think of stars.

You have to be able to carry astrid off mind you. It's a challenge of a name to have.

I love Iris.

pilates · 10/04/2014 19:47

Josephine - I like the family connection.

mummybare · 10/04/2014 19:56

What a lovely list, OP - I actually like them all. If you don't like Jo, though, it would probably be wise to steer clear of Josephine. Even if she's Josie for 11 years, it could still get shortened.

Astrid and Frida are just gorgeous and Iris is also very pretty.

SweetPenelope · 10/04/2014 21:07

We have an Astrid at school and I heard her father call her "Ass" the other day. Not nice.

tznett · 10/04/2014 21:52

Josephine (Josie) is a lovely name.

Boygirl5 · 10/04/2014 23:27

I love Josie

MyBatman · 10/04/2014 23:38

I like Josephine most, and then Iris.

indigo18 · 10/04/2014 23:43

Think Iris is going to be in the Most Popular list soon..

Brodicea · 11/04/2014 09:53

Thanks all - and thanks for the suggestion of Freya ( but a friend has chosen that one already). Astrid is a challenge, both to carry off and to avoid any 'Ass' comments or shortenings. I had thought I would wait until I saw her to chose, but I am a bit worried I just won't make up my mind!

I think there will be lots of Irises cropping up (pardon the pun!) in the coming years. Also we like the boys name Idris so if we have another and it's a boy, it would be effectively used up already! But it is very pretty, compared to the more strident Frida.

Thanks for your input though, really helpful to dwell on in my final weeks before she gets here - still undecided! Thanks
