'to return home'?

DH and I will be moving back to England after seven long years abroad, and DD2 will be born in England. It would be nice to be able to capture this new stage in our family's life as part of DD2's middle name - within reason. I'm looking for either literal translations of 'home' or 'returning' or any historical/mythological individuals famous for having found their way home. 'Lassie' will not be considered but any other tenuous suggestions gratefully accepted!

We have Irish and Polish in our backgrounds, and I'm happy to plunder the whole of Western civilization for names. There's a very cool Yoruba name out there but I'm not sure I could quite justify it.

CheerfulYank · 07/04/2014 07:11

Ayda or Aida can mean "returning".

Penelope, who waited for Odysseus to come home?

PeaceLillyDoge · 07/04/2014 07:11

Boomer, short for boomerang

Littleturkish · 07/04/2014 07:12

Just reread OP. Sorry, DD's middle name. I will try again.

Penelope?

AnaisB · 07/04/2014 07:12

Cora

Sorry for link fail

Did the prodigal son have a name?

Who else sailed with Odysseus?

florascotia · 07/04/2014 09:01

The myth of Proserpina /Persephone is based on a (seasonal) return from the Underworld.
So is the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice (but sadly...)

Beatrix probably comes from a Latin word 'Viatrix' which means 'traveller'.

Peregrine (boy's name) definitely means 'traveller, pilgrim'. Would you consider a version of that? It's also the name of a wonderful bird, of course...

According to Christian legends, St Helena travelled long distances; so did St Ursula. I expect there were other travelling saints, also.

The Irish boy's name Doran means 'wanderer', I believe. Can Irish Mumsnetters perhaps help with a female version???

I may be wrong, and maybe some other Mumsnetters can help, but does the girl's name Saira mean traveller in Arabic???

Is there a place in Britain where you are hoping to settle? If so, there may be a name linked to that. For example, Sabrina was the goddess/nymph of the River Severn; the Romans worshipped their goddess Minerva in Bath and the water-nymph Coventina near Hadrian's Wall.

Nocomet · 07/04/2014 09:41

Hestia, Greek or Vesta, to the Romans.

Elysia means home ofthe blessed.
Or Kylie? Means boomerang.

grizzabellia · 07/04/2014 12:50

I think Aaliyah might mean something like returning home, or for jews returning to the promised land?

seashell81 · 07/04/2014 16:27

Xavier means 'new home.'

BreakingDad77 · 07/04/2014 16:47

Tweak Casa to Casey?

OhTinky · 07/04/2014 16:58

Adeona. Goddess of returning children home.

sarahquilt · 07/04/2014 19:26

I was wracking my brains for legendary Irish ladies who might symbolise return. The closest I can think of is Fionnuala who was one of the Children of Lir. When her stepmother's evil spell was broken, she did not have to take the form of a swan anymore and returned home. Saoirse is a nice name too which means freedom (pronounced Seersha).

BlondeMalteser · 07/04/2014 20:53

I loved brokenhearted55a's suggestion of Dorothy... Could name her dotty or dori for short. Also love the suggestion of Penelope since that's one of my favourite names anyway

Dovahkiin · 08/04/2014 05:54

I'm loving these - thanks so much. DH has had his heart set on Penelope since day one - I think it will be a bit much a Greek first name as well.
