Boy's name stress!

Our baby's due in just over three weeks and we're so stuck on boys names. We don't know the sex and have Matilda picked for a girl.
I could never understand people who had couldn't decide a name in nine months and now I'm one of them Hmm
The names we've liked have been Arthur, Oscar and Oliver. Arthur I love but I know a couple of recent baby Arthurs. Oscar DH has gone off if completely. Oliver is probably the front runner but DH isn't convinced.
DH likes Freddie but I'm not a big fan of Fred or Frederick and not too keen on Freddie on the birth certificate.
Middle name has to be John for sentimental reasons.
Please help! Smile

Arthur John is nice

Or

Conrad John
Otto John
Stanley John
Theodore John

When I was pregnant with my ds I wanted Freddie but on birth certificate I was going to put Alfred, as I disliked Fred or Fredrick.
Could that work?

wizzler · 06/04/2014 11:17

Alfred John sounds lovely.

CountessOfRule · 06/04/2014 11:27

Wilfred?

Oliver is great but has had a major spike in popularity. Would that bother you?

Cupcake11 · 06/04/2014 11:31

I do like Alfred but one of the ladies from my antenatal class has just had twins and called them Matilda and Alfie.
We've had Matilda picked out for ages and I don't know her well enough to make me change it now but maybe copying both of her names might be a bit much. I know they're not exactly the same but still!

The popularity thing did bother me at first but now I think we'd rather pick something that we like that's popular than something we don't just because it's unusual. Ideally I'd like something less popular though.

she won't know you have copied both her names though as you would only be picking one? She might have Alfie on the birth certif anyway not Alfred.

Cupcake11 · 06/04/2014 11:38

Unfortunately she does know we have Matilda picked out for a girl.

Don't worry about her! This is your baby and will be his name for life. You may never see the antenatal class woman again.

Go for it.

Also, Felix.

Writerwannabe83 · 06/04/2014 12:00

I'd go with Arthur.

I can't stand Oscar and every 2nd baby born seems to be called Oliver these days.

Arthur is just lovely Smile

Similar names:

Edgar
Albert
Morris
Peter
Austin
Crispin
Marcus

NewtRipley · 06/04/2014 19:30

What about Evan? (which is Welsh variant of John) Then you could choose something else for the middle name.

I like Arthur best from your choices

or

Victor
Patrick
Marcus (again)

Freddie is pretty cool, I'd just go for that on the birth certificate.
Otherwise you could have Alfred or Wilfred.

Frank / Francis
Rufus
Wilbur

Beastofburden · 07/04/2014 16:34

you could just call him John, of course....

Cupcake11 · 07/04/2014 18:12

I hadn't considered Wilfred before - I like the nn Will too.
I'll see what DH says!
Lots of good ideas, thank you.

Don't like Oscar and Oliver was THE number one name a couple of years ago...

Mrsfullhouse · 07/04/2014 22:22

Wilbur?

We have an Arthur and are expecting another boy, our options are...

Henry
Spencer
James
Stanley
Hugo

Dh likes Sterling too, but I'm not so keen
