Dd2 is arriving by section in 10 days. We've chosen Emilia Ruby, which I adore by sound. But now a little bit worried that people will assume it's Amelia which I know is insanely similar. I don't care about popularity. I'm a primary school teacher and don't know any Amelias or Emilias but lots of Amelies.

So Emilia Ruby
Or Amelia Ruby

When I say Emilia it sounds very different to Ameelia-

A-meel-ee-a
Em-ill-ee-a

Haven't explained it very well but you know what I mean! I prefer Emilia

mathanxiety · 06/04/2014 04:20

I like the Em sound at the start of Emilia. The Am sound in Amelia makes it seem like A meal iya and emphasises the word 'meal' in the middle. Imo.

Tea1Sugar · 06/04/2014 07:16

Apparently Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones has ramped up it's popularity!

Emilia is far prettier Smile

In RL I have only ever heard "Emilia" pronounced as a version of Emily.

Whereas Amelia starts with an 'Am' and has a longer vowel sound in the middle.

It'd choose the spelling based on the pronunciation you want.

teaSug... only 2 days to go!!! how exciting. stick with your first instinct... Emilia.

as for us... we have our final name, good job too as being induced in 2 weeks now. We have Phoebe May :-)

Tea1Sugar · 14/04/2014 07:55

Hi RV! Elcs tomorrow ahhh! SO excited but fracking scared! Definitely ready to meet her now, I'm so over being pregnant. I never imagined I could get so huge. Why are you being induced? Hope everything's ok Smile

Please don't be put off by the lack of arm or whatever the medical issue is. I have an Amelia and a Claudia, I doubt very much people look at them and think "oh congenital arm defect" and "lame" are coming to visit.

I think you have made up your mind, but the reason we discounted Emilia was because we thought we and her would spend all our time saying "No it's E-milia not Amelia"

Anyway both gorgeous names, good luck!!

Congratulations! We have an Emilia too. Fab name Smile

traininthedistance · 20/04/2014 12:08

Emilia - much nicer. Italian variant of Emily. Amelia always makes me think of Enid Blyton's naughty Amelia Jane.

My mum wanted us to call DD Aemilia, complete with the dipthong ligature in the spelling, after the Renaissance poet Aemilia Lanyer! So you could always combine them (might be a bugger to spell though Grin)

traininthedistance · 20/04/2014 12:09

Oh just saw you chose Emilia! Congrats!!

derektheladyhamster · 20/04/2014 12:12
