What will our grandchildren be called?

If you have babies/small children now, what do you predict they'll be calling their children in 20-30 years time?

I'm thinking of the names people who are in their 70s now will come back round:
Susan
Joan
Jane
Peter
Ron
Roy
Derek?

Along with more unusual non-traditional names.

I think the current old man/old lady trend is all to do with people naming babies after grandparents, so I think the names of our parents:

Peter
Andrew
Christine
Neil
Joan
Jean

And then maybe the next generation will get back into the Kevin / Tracey / Claire / Louise / Mark / Andrew vibe.

I have no idea,im guessing it will just keep going round and round,but i dont imagine the 70s style names will ever be back,like Tracey,Karen,Sharon and Kevin.

Hopefully the Amelia;s and Oliver's will fade out soon though,im so sick of hearing them,lovely names but they seem so bland now because they are overused.

On that list of "people in their 70s" is me! I'm 43!

I have heard of a baby Desmond. That depresses me!

Buffy? Willow? Xander? Cordelia? Angel? Giles?

Personally I like the name Giles very much. My little boy has an old-fashioned name, but it was quite common in sixties and seventies, and even before that. But I like it, and I like the fact he is not getting mixed up with somebody else in the whole school year(120 pupils).

Well, an awful lot of girls' names that are cutting edge right now (Ivy, Elsie, Edith etc) were also very popular 100 years ago.

So, fast forward (say) 40 years to 2054, and perhaps 1940s or 1950s names will become popular again:

It does seem a bit unlikely, however....

On the other hand, if newly-fashionable/ unusual names or combinations of names take a good long time to become more widely known, perhaps some of these 2012 names will have become wildly popular by the time that grandchildren are born.

And NB TheNight, Derek IS included among them!!! (it's a middle name in the list of longest names, along with a Reginald and a Nixon)

I'm also on that list and I'm 47! I love the fact that old fashioned names are coming back. On the radio the other morning was a young boy called Ernest which I think is a brilliant name. I also knew a boy called Albert, also a great name.

I remember falling about laughing with my sister when we were little over the idea of baby Edith, baby Maud, baby Ruby etc as these were all my nan's friends' names.
So by that measure it'll be baby Lynne, baby Sue, baby Diane.

Well, there seems to be a bit of a 'mid-century revival' thing going on at the moment, so I can definitely see some of the post-war Enid Blyton-style names coming around again - things like Anne, Susan, Mary, Judith, Sally, Daphne and Nancy for girls and Richard, Ralph, Laurence, David, Peter, Philip, Robin for boys. (Mind you, some of the names from that era definitely need a bit longer in rehab IMO: Harold/Dennis/Roy/Janice/Brenda etc.)

Barbara and Wendy will be back I predict. Hopefully not Nigel.

I think a lot of those girls names on the 1940s list will come back. People are getting sick of all the girly -a and -ee sounding names and if you look at the list a lot of them end with constanant sounds Eg

I think the next wave of names will be Jean/Mary/Sylvia of which I've heard Jean is already rising in popularity in London. I blame it on Call the Midwife.

Robin for boys is interesting Diamonds. I wonder if we'll see boys reclaiming names that the girls have taken.

Nancy is already coming round, I know 3 under 5.

On the boys front, traditional names like Richard, Simon, Stephen, David all seem to have fallen out of fashion so maybe they'll be back. Heard a little boy called Tim the other day and it seemed a bit odd.

Catherine, Victoria, Jennifer, Barbara, Elizabeth for girls?

Patricia, Gillian, Karen, Pamela, Dinah, June and Belinda for girls
Brian, Colin, Alan, Clive, Anthony, Bernard and Simon for boys.

I love Reginald and Ernest.

With the normal 'rules' being that names come arnd every 90 years or so, then our children will name their children after names popular in our mothers' generation.

BUT with the internet and other connections, I think we'll see more and more foreign names being used, possibly from Asia, especially for girls. For boys, I think European versions of common names might become more popular.

I would love to call a DD Vera. I hear Russian chic.

I have my grandchildren :) i won't give all the names too 'outing' but I have an Edward and a Max and a Connie and a Sarah. Those are aged between 5 and 14.

Do you think Valerie will ever have a revival or Dorothy? There were several of each in my class at school.

Xander and xavier according to dd1 and they will be twins boys or ebony and ivory who will be twin girls! I very much hope she is joking and even tried to explain why not. She is 17 by the way so could be sooner rather than later
