The Emilia I know is pronounced Em eel ya.

RiverTam · 15/03/2014 08:53

they are pronounced almost identically - a friend had one a while back, I never saw it written down and it was a while before I realised she was an Emilia not an Amelia. I prefer Emilia to look at.

I'd say Amelia
Even though it's much more well known.

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2014 21:53

I like Emilia best, it's lovely. It looks much prettier in the written form than Amelia, and I think it sounds nicer.

My only concern would be that there's a good chance people will mishear it and think it's Amelia.

Beanymonster · 15/03/2014 22:01

Both are horrifically popular where I live.. And I always get the Amelia's and Emilia's mixed up.. Whoops! Might be worth checking popularity In your area, but I love amelia, it was our top name until I realised how popular it was :(

MajesticWhine · 15/03/2014 22:11

Amelia. Because Emilia is more likely to be mispronouced.

BackforGood · 15/03/2014 22:20

I'd say Amelia too, partly because when people hear it, I suspect that is how most would spell it, and secondly, because everyone knows how to pronounce it, but even you (who are choosing it) are asking how to say it - I think that's just going to be a pain in the bum throughout your dd's life, tbh.

DailyBread · 15/03/2014 23:03

How else would you pronounce it but E-meel-eeya? Confused

AmysTiara · 15/03/2014 23:10

Aren't both names pronounced the same anyway?

AHardDaysWrite · 15/03/2014 23:15

We had exactly the same dilemma. All through my pregnancy dd was going to be Emilia. Every single person I mentioned it to assumed I was saying Amelia (I asked them how they would spell the name and they always began "A...").

In the end, we decided we couldn't saddle dd with a lifetime of explaining "It's Emilia, with an E, not Amelia.."

Dd is called Phoebe, and it suits her perfectly Grin

Newgoldheelsrock · 15/03/2014 23:44

Pretty but there are hundreds of both versions.

NadiaWadia · 16/03/2014 01:39

Looking at the names again I don't see why they are considered to be pronounced almost identically. It is not just the first letter in each name that is different. Amelia is am-eel-eeya as everyone knows. But it is not Emelia, its Emilia so you would think it should be em-ill-eeya. Different sound in the middle as well as at the start.

Ilikepancakes · 17/03/2014 16:47

I like both of them. I like Amelia because people will always spell it right and you can shorten it to Mia which is cute. I like Emilia because it is less common and a bit more interesting and you can nickname her Emmy which is lovely and much less common than Mia. So I think I would choose Emilia.

Tea1Sugar · 17/03/2014 17:13

Thanks :-) dd2 will be Emilia nn Emmy. Still waiting for dp to come up with his list of possible middle names :/
