How do you pronounce it? Is it like Alfs wife from Home & Away?

LunaOnTheBrooma · 12/03/2014 19:11

I love it.

florascotia · 12/03/2014 19:11

Ayle-sah, like the island en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ailsa_Craig

littlemissbroadway · 12/03/2014 19:18

Ailsa is ok, I know one who always has it mistaken for Alisa (Ay-leesa), Elsa, or Alyssa. It's pretty enough but would often be mixed up with other names.

Bowlersarm · 12/03/2014 19:22

Prefer Elsa.

hunreeeal · 12/03/2014 19:54

It's a pretty name. I don't know any little Ailsas.

fhdl34 · 12/03/2014 20:16

Makes me think of Alf's wife from home and away. That is all. Quite individual

Flyingdaisies1978 · 12/03/2014 20:20

What about Ada (pronounced Aida) ?

PoloMintCity · 12/03/2014 20:23

Oh I'd forgotten about Alf's wife!! Was she murdered in the end?! Blush That's fairly positive then - next hurdle is DH!

I love it. I've only ever known one who will be in her early 20s now. Unusual and beautiful. Maybe quite common in Scotland I don't know. Nowhere else though, I'm sure.

scarletforya · 12/03/2014 20:49

What about Alice, that's similar but prettier.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2014 04:07

I love it.

Newgoldheelsrock · 13/03/2014 04:21

Yes - are you Scottish - there are a few Scottish girls' names I really love. We have an Eilidh, but I also like Isla, Aila, Mairi, Maisie, Caitriona, Elspeth, Flora. And Bonnie is sweet as well

SheMovesWithTheSparrows · 13/03/2014 04:32

It's lovely.

aGirlDownUnder1 · 13/03/2014 08:55

Ailsa is a lovely name, I think Alf's wife died of a heart attack in the diner!

Driveway · 13/03/2014 09:04

Love Ailsa

ShadowFall · 13/03/2014 09:20

It's okay.

Makes me think of the Scottish island. (I don't watch Home & Away)

soontobeslendergirl · 13/03/2014 10:48

Ailsa is not unusual, but not very common in Scotland either.

Its lovely and makes a nice change from Isla and Iona.

We had planned on Mairi or Kirsty if we'd had girls but current favourites for girls would probably be Lorna or Shona

MerryMarigold · 13/03/2014 10:54

I don't know why, I think of old ladies. (Elsa does this for me too, despite Frozen and a small, cute family member). And I think it sounds like 'wail' which isn't a nice association (you could call her Wailsa if she's a colicky baby I suppose). I don't really object, but don't love it.
