How would you pronounce Leia?

Hi all

I thought we had 2 names picked out- Olivia and Madeleine. I still love both of these. Hubby likes, but doesn't love them. He loves Leia. Now I'm not totally against, but prefer the other names we had picked. One of my major concerns about Leia is how people would pronounce it- so, please can you tell me how you'd pronounce it? It may make a middle name, I'm not sue about a first name- what do you all think of it?

Thanks in advance! :-)

You'd be safer giving her Leia as a middle name and Princess as a first, then everyone will pronounce it properly!

Lay ah

Ilikepancakes · 11/03/2014 22:43

LAY-ah like Princess Leia.

Sharaluck · 11/03/2014 22:47

Lay-a

scarlettsmummy2 · 11/03/2014 22:47

Leah

InfiniteJest · 11/03/2014 23:12

Laya, because of Star Wars.

UnacceptableWidge · 11/03/2014 23:20

Star Wars fans would pronounce it correctly, most other people will pronounce it 'Lee-ah' your DD probably won't care and initially you will probably correct people and point out that no, actually she wasn't Princess Leah she was Princess Leia but overtime that frustration will pass because all her friends will have given her a nickname so nobody says either name anymore bitter experience of a Star Wars fan

iggi101 wish we'd thought of that

My dn is a teenage Leia (not after Star Wars I'm told) and I don't think pronunciation has ever been an issue. Not enough to be a problem anyway.

It's not my cup of tea because I like names which can be shortened in a variety of ways, but she loves it which is all that matters really.

Hello there - I'd say 'Lyah'

elQuintoConyo · 12/03/2014 08:39

Layer. As in Cake [grin[

Grin fail!

I'd pronounce it lay-ah. I know a lea who pronounces it lay-ah (not English born) and she has to correct people but never found it a problem really.

Stokey · 12/03/2014 16:28

Think Leah is Lee-ah and Leia is Lay-a

WE gave dd Leya as a middle name (pronounced the same as Lay-a but Spanish version & no Star Wars association)

littlemissbroadway · 12/03/2014 16:51

It's definitely Lay-ah like in Star Wars. Please, if you do it, don't name your sons Anakin or Luke ;)
