Is this a bit pretentious?

Currently 39+ 4 and still have no names. We don't know what we are having, currently have 2 boys. We think we have a girls name but what do you think of the name Rafe-as in Fiennes or Spall?
Immediately I think it might be a bit pretentious, but the more I say it.......

Ps what is your girls name?! (Looking for my own inspiration...)

HolidayCriminal · 10/03/2014 19:35

Ralph = vomit in American slang, definitely spell it Rafe.

ThursdayLast · 10/03/2014 19:38

I live rafe spall!

devoncreamtea · 10/03/2014 20:12

My Son is a Rafe. He is 3 now and so so suits it - it's charming and boyish, but strong sounding too. i fell in love with it - no idea where I got it from - but when I checked it out it means 'Wolf' or 'counsel of wolves' and is a Scandinavian name.

Go for it! I'm glad I did.

ginzillas · 10/03/2014 21:05

Rafe Spall ia gorgeous! Great name.

DitsyDonkey · 10/03/2014 21:17

Lovely, and there is nothing wrong with pretentious in my opinion Grin

Stropzilla · 10/03/2014 21:20

I love rafe and raphael.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 10/03/2014 21:36

I have a 2yo Raphael. He is Rafa/Rafe/Rafi/stinkybum.

Glasshammer · 10/03/2014 21:42

Rafe - ultra cool surfer dude meets polite well educated chap

LJBanana · 10/03/2014 23:19

Possible girls name is Livia. We've found this time it's been really difficult coming up with anything we agree on. DS2 didn't have a name for ages. DS1 was easy as I think generally you have a set name for first one's and it didn't waver in this case.
It's a mighty responsibility.

loll for those hundreds of people calling him Ralph...I mean in the vomit sense

Anjou · 11/03/2014 06:25

Another that would suggest spelling it Rafe over Ralph. Lovely name. If you wanted a longer name (not that you need it) have you considered Rafferty with nn Rafe?

LJBanana · 11/03/2014 06:46

Morning. I'm not too keen on Rafferty. I do like it but it doesn't grab me. DP is more leaning towards Rapahel which I do really like just not sure I'm brave enough. He also likes Leonardo- with 2 boys already are you seeing a link??!!??

I love that name. But, I didn't use it as. Worried it was too pretentious.

Fab name though.

hubbahubster · 11/03/2014 07:50

One of my very best and oldest friends is Rafe so I think it's fab! It's a family name for him and he's not posh at all.

itfcbabe · 14/03/2014 03:45

Love this name and will be used if i do have another baby and is a boy.

Spelt Rafe not Ralph though

ItIsAnIdeasGame · 14/03/2014 03:51

He has two cousins called Minty and Lucinda.

ItIsAnIdeasGame · 14/03/2014 03:53

Spell it Ralph and say Rafe, if you wish. It's perfectly fine.

mathanxiety · 14/03/2014 05:18

I love Raphael and knew two growing up in Ireland ages ago.
I also knew a Raftery (which imo is far nicer than Rafferty, which reminds me of the playground song 'seven old ladies were locked in the lavatory')
A friend of DD1's is Rieffe (pr Reef) which I like too.

I would use Raphael as the BC name and use Ralph (pr Rafe) as the NN and to heck with all this 'is this too posh for us' Britishness.

mathanxiety · 14/03/2014 05:19

Livia is gorgeous.

LJBanana · 14/03/2014 10:46

I'm having a name breakdown. Now a day overdue and we haven't got a clue!

Boys
Leo
Rafe
Raphael

Girls
Livia
Aurelia
Jemima?

Help me!!!!!!

I know a baby with this name and think it is very cool. Would have been pretentious 10 years ago but not any more i'd say. Aww baby Rafe-y ;-)

mathanxiety · 14/03/2014 15:03

Having seen your other names, I don't think you can have a Leo and a Louis. They are just too similar. (I am assuming you pronounce Louis Lou-ee and not Lewis)

So I would pick Raphael, nn Ralph, pr Rafe.

And you can't go wrong with any of those girls' names -- see what she looks like and choose one. They are all gorgeous imo.

LJBanana · 14/03/2014 15:09

Yes Louis is pronounced Louie. He is the oldest though so I was thinking I'd say the names in child age order.
I do know what you mean though and you aren't the first to say it. I like Joseph as a middle name which would give them the exact same initials.

I think I might just have to give up and await arrival as you said.
We didn't have a name for no2 at all and did the same, tried different ones out when he arrived.
