Surname begins with an a....

This I'm sure sounds stupid.
Many first names end with an 'a', particularly girls.
My surname begins with an a.
I am stupid by thinking that I can have a first name ending in an a, along with a surname beginning with an a.
Somehow they don't sound right together.
E.g. Anna Alcock, Anna Adams.
What do you think, are names like this awkward to say?

I'm sure this sounds ridiculous....

Ella Alcock sounds fine to me

As does Ella Adams

Thanks. There are a lot of lovely girls names ending in a. I like Isla

You might run the risk of rogue 'r' sounds slipping in - I.e. Anna-Radams or Eller-Adams. This naturally makes it easier to say than having a gluttoral vowel sound to start the surname. (Not sure I have explained that very well but hopefully you know what I mean).

What about names like Hazel, Seren, Bronwen, Bethan, Danielle, Marianne, Annabel, Caroline, Jennifer....

My maiden name started with an 'a' and I'm a Victoria. Never caused problems.

My newborn DD's surname begins with an A and we're avoiding first names ending in A.

It doesn't seem to flow right.

Bowlersarm · 09/03/2014 11:56

I think it totally depends on the names involved.

I think Anna Alcock is fine.

But I think Ella Alcock is weak. Too many soft 'l's.

Ella Adams would be great though.

Does your name sound like 'a' at the beginning cos mine starts with an a but sounds like 'all' which wouldn't sound bad with Anna or Ella.

Mrsindecision · 09/03/2014 14:08

I think both your examples sound lovely - don't worry and overthink things!

sleepingbeautiful · 09/03/2014 17:21

The problem with your examples is the first names both start and end with an A, as well as the surname ie Anna Adams. Only one A on the first name works fine.
Eg Alice Adams or Zara Adams.
