How would you say it?

I thought it was literally Ann-ya but after my thread last night I've realised this may not be correct and that's it's meant to be more of an Ahn-ya!

I would say Ann-ya. The two I've known have been that way.

BusinessUnusual · 02/03/2014 07:14

I would say Ann-ya.

CommanderShepard · 02/03/2014 07:27

Anya in Buffy was Arn-yuh but I think that's more of an American pronunciation. Everywhere else I've heard it it's Ann-yuh.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/03/2014 12:51

Ann-ya

Ahn-ya is more an American way of pronouncing it.

meerschweinchen · 02/03/2014 12:54

Ann-ya. German spelling is Anja, but pronounced Ann-ya. I've never heard Ahnya before. Sounds horrible, but pronounced Annya, it's one of my favourite names!

anja1cam · 02/03/2014 13:01

I'm with Meerschweinchen on this one. My name is pronounced thus (Ann-ya) and all English speaking people spell it Anya by default. So that might be the majority version. American version is nearly Ohn-yah to me and I never asked myself how it would be spelled,so 'Anya' is a bit of a surprise Smile...

TidyDancer · 02/03/2014 14:53

I've only ever known it as Ann-ya. It's missing an h or r after the A to turn it to the other pronounciation.

DramaAlpaca · 02/03/2014 16:58

Ann-ya.

Dukketeater · 02/03/2014 22:09

Ruprekt · 02/03/2014 22:10

Actually Ahn-ya is also Russian pronunciation.

arabellarubberplant · 02/03/2014 22:52

Yup. Ours is Ann ya. But we moved to North America and so she is destined to have to correct everyone or put up with the inconsistency for life, now. Grin

Mind you, you should hear everyone mangle her sister's name....

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/03/2014 22:52

My sil is Russian and doesn't pronounce it Ahn-ya but suppose there must be some variance in accents

MrsRuffdiamond · 02/03/2014 22:56

A friend of mine has an dd, name spelled 'Anya', but pronounced 'Onya'.

I believe there is a paternal Irish connection!

Cuxibamba · 02/03/2014 22:59

Ann-ya.

CeliaLytton · 02/03/2014 23:03

Ann ya. The only version I have heard pronounced Awn ya is the Irish spelling Aine.

Lovely name.

winterhat · 02/03/2014 23:54

ANN-yuh

NanaNina · 03/03/2014 01:08

My beautiful grand daughter is called Anya (yes definitely Ann ya) I think it is Russian in origin. It was a toss between Anya and Katya which is also a lovely name I think - remember that name in Dr. Zhivago. Oh and Lara from that film too.

hannahlb4884 · 03/03/2014 14:37

I have always heard it pronounced ANN-ya.

moomin35 · 09/03/2014 22:48

I always say arn-ya!
