Love both Hamish and Hector and can't decide between them. Which do you prefer?

just call him bully me for life

Either would be lovely- sad about all the hating on Hector; I had a lovely grandpa Hector (Scottish) and would consider using it if I ever have a DS.

I like both with a slight preference for Hamish.

Used to dislike Hector till I met a seriously hot 20 something of that name. Changed my perception completely.

Hamish! I know a totally gorgeous little Hamish, his parents call him 'mish mash' which is so so cute!

bakeroony · 05/02/2014 19:59

Hamish. It's just so squishy mishy sounding. Love it!

florascotia · 06/02/2014 20:05

Erm no - Seamus is not 'Gaelic for Hamish'.

Seamus is Gaelic for James.

Hamish is an English spelling of the vocative of Seamus (Gaelic = a' Seamais or a' Sheamuis). Spellings vary from Scotland to Ireland and beyond. But the sound is much the same, ie 'Ushamish'. Again, precise pronunciations vary.

The vocative is the form of a name used when speaking to someone. So Hi James, or James! = a' Sheamuis = Hamish

Hamish. It's a lovely name. t

The verb to hector means to talk at someone in a lecturing, domineering manner, so I wouldn't want to inflict that name on a child. Even though the only Hector I ever met was cute as could be and not at all like that.

Lottystar · 06/02/2014 20:20

Hector, more manly and strong Smile

RalphRecklessCardew · 06/02/2014 20:22

Hamish. No contest.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/02/2014 20:49

Hector - love it.

aoife24 · 06/02/2014 21:16

I love them both. Might just come down on Hamish though.

My 10 week old cocker spaniel puppy is called Hector Smile

Have a friend called Hamish, we called him 'mish' sometimes, but it's not easy to shorten.
