Is Felix the new Oscar/ Hugo?

It seems really popular with the Clapham/Fulham/Putney/London middle class parents. Is it a cliche name or nice name? Baby due in a few months, it's one of the only boys names we can agree on. Would love help on similar names- quite short, not really, really common, but not too out there. Thanks!!

I think of it in the same breath as Theo and Oscar but it's nicer and a bit less used, I think. How about Magnus, Francis, Henry, Eric, Victor, Miles, Eli, Theo, Leo?

Felix is more classic IMO. It's a Biblical name so pretty established. I think it's much nicer than Oscar and Hugo.

I think it's coming back tbh. When I named my dc1 I thought felix and Oscar came in the same breath.

oldest Hugo I know 5
oldest Oscar and Felixes I know both in their teens

And I'm in Dublin here so not aware of London fashions.

Don't know any baby Hugos (except my own who hasn't been born yet!), but I know quite a few Oscars ... And I have a cat called Oscar.
Felix is lovely. If I didn't already know one with the same surname it would be my second choice

I hope not, it's my favourite boys name.

I think some people are still put off due to the cat food connection, which is fine by me.

Felix was a VERY close runner up to our son's name, which has also been mentioned here.

I know 2 Felixes, one German aged 36, the other is Spanish, aged 5.

Son's name is the only one we know, although I have met two in the past, bith aged between 25-35 Grin

Felix is a GREAT name, and if anyones mentios the c-a-t word, just tell them to rack off Grin

I went to a London museum today not far from a v mc area & these are the boys names I heard:
Jarvis
Harvey
Milo
Oscar
Henry
Rafferty
Hugo
Jasper
Harry
Conrad
Felix

These sound as if they belong to a particular tribe of people.

Felix has been around for ages. I know a Dutch Felix in his 50s.

It was a front runner for DD1 if she had been a boy. While I think its perhaps in the same vein as Hugo, all that means is that it isn't in the same vein as more used names e.g. John, Charlie etc. It will always be linked to a 'type of name' as is every other name out there because people like to categorise names!

I definitely don't think its like Oscar which was very much 'of the moment' (not helped by being the name of one of the babies in EastEnders!).

I wouldn't call Felix a fad name at all and it has such a lovely meaning. Its also a name that travels well.

It's definitely booming in popularity.

To me it's much faddier than Oscar but that's because I know lots of adult Oscars and only young Felixes.

Likewise in Ireland Oscar has been popular for decades.

I love it, I know a 13 year old Felix and no others. Sadly our surname begins with an 'F' so a no-goer!

I also love Felicity for a girl... same problem!

In Ireland the connection being Wilde. Personally I don't know any adult Oscars. I'm far more likely to think its old due to the Sesame Street connection :-)

I've always thought the meaning of Felix is 'happiness', 'lucky' and/or 'successful'. I love it!

The connection in Ireland goes a bit beyond Wilde. In Irish mythology Oscar was the son of Oisín and Niamh.

Just googled the Irish connection to Oscar and see it was used in Irish folklore.

You could check the popularity in the Irish baby name stats that are published annually but you won't find any of the three names v popular there.

Yes there have been quite a few in those areas for quite a while. It was our joint top (with Hugo) and our neighbour had one. She thought she was being interesting but found another three at playgroup. he'd be about seven now.

Ime all the boys in the area seemed to be be called Sam though...

Love it. It's my baby DS's middle name.

I don't think it will become as trendy as Oscar and Hugo. Felix has been just outside the top 100 for years. Oscar and Hugo have steadily risen for years.

Oscar - nice name, but two-a-penny. Felix, errrm, I don't mind it but I know at least 5 of them. Hugo - never met one, imagined they only existed in private schools!

My Felix is 12 and his best friend is Hugo. In rural Cheshire so definitely not fancy London names!
