Boys' names are impossible

We don't know yet whether we're having a boy or a girl but if it's a boy we're going to be really stuck for names.

I like:

Henry-DH not a fan
Toby-on principle I prefer 'full names' but I don't like Tobias so this is prob a no
David-there are about 60 million Davids in the family already
Frederick-DH utterly horrified by this one
Hamish-ditto
Arthur-v close friend (of many years) has just named her son this
Alfred-DH thinks this is a joke Confused

The only name DH likes is James, which I don't mind, but I don't like Jamie, Jim or Jimmy and I think it's silly to pick a name where whatever nickname the poor boy gets or chooses I will be disappointed!

Any suggestions? Basically we don't like any of the more modern, fashionable names like Oscar, Milo etc.

Thomas, Elliot (too modern?)

Pregnantberry · 28/01/2014 15:49

And glad you like Luke, it's on my list as well - so you had better not turn out to be someone I know! Wink

I used James as a middle name as I don't like Jamie.

We really struggled with boys names. Oddly enough both our boys have extremely popular names.

Christopher is lovely or how about Quentin? Or Dominic?

Lottie345 · 31/01/2014 04:52

In exactly the same boat although DH seems to be coming round to a few.

Our short list is George (but yes royal annoyance - DH thinks everyone won't care anymore), Henry (but DH thinks it's too close to DCs cousin Harry), James, Alfred (DH likes Alfie- I like Freddie) and I'm a fan of Wilfred (will or Freddie) but DH dislikes.

I like Jonathan but it's my brothers name. It does get shorted to jon, which my mum hates, or Johnny but most people call him by his full name.

Most other suggestions have been mentioned above but I think Duncan, Oliver, Toby, Dylan, Thomas, Hugo all strong names. Why are there so few boy names tho!!

TheBookofRuth · 31/01/2014 06:25

Anthony?
Philip?

RalphRecklessCardew · 31/01/2014 07:05

John? Classic, strong, and very underused.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 31/01/2014 07:09

My son is called Alexander, my OH Peter- I like them both, good solid strong male names.

yummymumtobe · 31/01/2014 07:31

Totally agree with lovely strong, traditional names which give no indication of when/where you were born etc and will never age!
George
Henry
Edward
William
John
James

Those names have more 'elegance' for me than the other traditional ones eg Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, David etc

atthestrokeoftwelve · 31/01/2014 07:36

You have quoted John in both lists!!

Mycatistoosexy · 31/01/2014 07:37

Thomas
Daniel

sashh · 31/01/2014 07:54

I know a James who is 34 and only ever been James.

As for nicknames, well true nicknames can be anything, he could end up being Batman or Twilight.

Harold
Edward
Stephen
Charles
Malcolm
Edgar
David

you have a few kings names so thought you might like other kings.

yummymumtobe · 31/01/2014 22:29

Sorry, John meant to be on the first list. Impossible to say Matthew, Mark and Luke without John!

SweetPeaPods · 31/01/2014 22:39

Just a few that were on our list- William
Finlay
Jonathan
Jacob
Joshua
Caleb
Rory
Harrison
Reuben
James
Daniel
Lewis
